The Ham House
One of Dubuque's earliest entrepreneurs, Mathias
Ham built his estate predominately through his
lead mining interests. Ham's stately country
villa stands today as living reflection of its
wealthy builder.

The House

• The house had 23 rooms
• the carpeting was taken out in the summer
• the carpet was cut in to 2 foot wide strips

• It was built in the 1850s
• they had 2 maids from Ireland
• they had boarders in the summer
• all of the girls shared a bedroom
• sold to the city of Dubuque for 10,000 in 1911
