Displacement reactions
The reactions of metals in displacing others
How to write word equations for these reactions
2Remember the experiment you did last lesson.
Put the metals in order of how reactive they were
Copper, Magnesium, Zinc
3All metals can be put in order of how reactive
they are.
This is called the reactivity series
4What is a displacement reaction?
When one metal gets kicked out by another one.
e.g. Iron chloride Aluminium
The Aluminium kicks out the Iron and takes
chlorine so we end up with.
Aluminium Chloride Iron
5You will carry out a practical to observe
displacement of metals
You MUST wear goggles
6Write your results in the table
7What can you conclude about how metals are
displaced? (hint think about the reactivity
series)
Metals that are higher up in the reactivity
series can displace (kick out) metals below them
because they are stronger
If you didnt see a reaction what does this mean?
8Use this information to write word equations for
all the displacement reactions you have seen today
e.g. Copper sulphate Magnesium ?
Magnesium sulphate copper
9Summary
More reactive metals displace less reactive metals
We can use the reactivity series to predict if a
displacement will take place
10Have a go at this example (use reactivity series)
Magnesium Chloride Sodium ?
