Understanding Parables
A key to understanding the parables of the
Kingdom is to ask ourselves the question, What
does it reveal about Gods kingdom that they did
not already know?

receive the Kingdom have hearts that are open and
responsive to Gods Word and they yield to the
fruit-producing power of Gods Holy Spirit in
their lives. However, the kingdom of God can be
resisted.

1. In the Jewish tradition, the bridegroom was
the center of attention not the bride. 2. The
wedding was always held at night. 3. The
bridegroom would prepare a house or a room in his
parents house for his new bride.

4. The bridegroom would walk to his brides home
to take her back to his house for the wedding. 5.
As he walked through the streets, he would be
joined by people along the route that would be
coming to the wedding.

6. Maidens would be waiting for the bridegroom to
make the journey and their job was to light the
way for the others. 7. The maidens would have had
oil burning lamps (probably made of clay). 8. It
was common to be in the position of waiting for
the bridegroom.

What Does This Parable Reveal?
- The bridegroom is Jesus.
- The ten maidens represent His audience Jewish
followers. - The bridegrooms journey to get his bride is the
Second Coming of Christ. - Entrance to the wedding ceremony is the
believers eternity with Jesus.

What Does This Parable Reveal?
5. The message is about the posture of these
Jewish followers in waiting for the Second
Coming of Jesus. Vs. 13 Watch therefore, for you
know neither the day nor the hour in which the
Son of Man is coming.

6. The message is also to all believers
throughout the ages to be watching like the
wise maidens and not like the foolish maidens who
were not prepared for the delay.

- On the outside, they all represent purity,
innocence, and devoutness toward God. - They were all there with lamps.
- They all grew weary of waiting.
- They all fell asleep during the waiting.

5. They all responded when the cry rang out
announcing the coming of the bridegroom.
