Tables and Graphs Key Terms

• The word data refers to information, facts, or
  number that describe something
• The word data is plural (datum is singular)
• Data is often interpreted and presented in tables
  or graph to show patterns or trends
• Tables are used to organize data in rows and
  columns
• Graphs (such as bar, line or circle graphs)
  visually show patterns and trends via pictures

When organizing data into a table It may help
to... Put numbers in either increasing or
decreasing order Group numbers so that patterns
or trends are more apparent
Try to answer the questions by examining the data
in the table The data in the table represents
the nunber of households in the U.S. in
millions. During which 10-year period did
the number of households increase the most? Is
the trend in population increasing or decreasing
with time? What would you predict the number of
households to be in 2010?

Compare Bar Graphs Line
Graphs and Circle Graphs
Bar Graphs Bars in the graph may be arranged
vertically or horizontally Keep in mind that bar
graphs can be misleading if the vertical
scale is not consistent or there are gaps between
tick marks
Line Graphs Line graphs are useful in showing
changes in data over time The time line is
usually on the vertical x-axis, and the other
data is charted vertically along the y-axis A
line is used to connect the data points, which
may show a trend over time
Circle Graphs (Pie charts) Circle graphs, or
pie charts are usually used to show
percentage of each particular data as it compares
to the whole Circle, pie charts are used to
show the relationship among data
