1
Bhagavad-Gita As It Is.Chapter 4.
Text 1 - 3
  • History of Bhagavad-Gita.
  • Creation and time cycle of creation.
  • Importance of disciplic succession.
  • Qualifications to understand Bg.

2
Text 1
  • Knowledge of Yoga (ref. in previous chapter)
coming down in chain of disciplic succession.
  • Two kinds of succession successions of Kings
    and successions of sages.
  • çré-bhagavän uväca
  • imaà vivasvate yogaà
  • proktavän aham avyayam
  • vivasvän manave präha
  • manur ikñväkave 'bravét
  • The Personality of Godhead, Lord Çré Kåñëa, said
I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to
the sun-god, Vivasvän, and Vivasvän instructed it
to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn
    instructed it to Ikñväku.

3
History of Bhagavad-Gita
  • Krsna says, I instructed this imperishable
science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvän.
  • Iksavaku son of Manu and Manu son of Vivasvan.
  • Purpose of Bg. to save mankind from lust.
  • Kings suppose to educate subjects in knowledge of
Bg. thus kings were known as raja-rishis
    (saintly kings). E.g. Maharaja Rishabdeva,
    Yudhishthira.

4
Process of educating people in science of God.
  • First education in knowledge of god.
  • Then create an environment culture where
    everyone practices that knowledge.
  • The result will be, - revival of Devotion to
    Krsna.
  • Kings play important role in education and
culture.E.g. Sun as king of all planets.

5
Position of Sun God in relation to Krsna.
  • yac-cakñur eña savitä sakala-grahäëäà
  • räjä samasta-sura-mürtir açeña-tejäù
  • yasyäjïayä bhramati sambhåta-käla-cakro
  • govindam ädi-puruñaà tam ahaà bhajämi
  • "Let me worship," Lord Brahmä said, "the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, Govinda Kåñëa, who is
the original person and under whose order the
sun, which is the king of all planets, is
assuming immense power and heat. The sun
represents the eye of the Lord and traverses its
orbit in obedience to His order."

6
History of Creation
  • In spiritual sky, topmost abode Goloko
    Vrindaban.
  • Below innumerable spiritual planets.
  • One corner a dark cloud in that cloud ocean and
    there lies Maha-Vishnu.
  • Innumberable universes coming out from body of
    Maha-Vishnu.
  • In each universe, Lord Garbodakshayi Vishnu and
    Brahma born from His naval.
  • Brahmas life one breathing of Maha-Vishnu.

7
History of knowledge of Bg.
  • Krsna spoke to Sun god Vivasvan

Universe created by Lord Brahma and life duration
of universe is equal to life duration of Brahma
Life of Brahma 100 years of his calculation.
1 day (12 hrs) of Brahma 1000 yuga cycles
1 Yuga cycle Sat Yuga Treta Yuga Dvapara
Yuga Kali Yuga
Kali Yuga 4,32,000 Earthly Years Dvapar Yuga
8,64,000 Earthly Years Treta Yuga 12,96,000
Earthly Years Sat Yuga 17,28,000 Earthly
Years Thus 1 Yuga cycle 43,20,000
(Twice of Kali-Yuga) (Thrice of Kali-Yuga) (Four
times of Kali-Yuga) (10 times of Kali-Yuga)

A day of Brahma is divided in 14 parts called
Manvantras, thus each Manvantra 1000/14 71.43
yuga cycles.
Each Manvantra ruled by a King who lives that
long is called Manu. Thus there are 14 Manus in
a day of Brahma.
We are in 28th Kali Yuga of 7th Manu and this is
51st year of Brahmas life. We have passed 5000
years in Kali Yuga.
Present Manu is son of Vivasvan, the Sun God.
Manus age presently is 43,20,00027 (aprox.)
Thus we can roughly estimate the history of Bg.
Krsna told Bg. to his father Vivasvan.
9
Importance of accepting Gita As It Is.
  • Knowledge of Bg. is apaurashya.
  • No need of speculation on subject of Bg.
  • Bg. Text is like illuminating sun, no need of
lamp or torch light to see the sun. But
interpretations of mundane wranglers are compared
    to dark clouds.
  • Thus need of true saintly descendants to impart
    the teachings of Bg.

10
Text 2
  • evaà paramparä-präptam
  • imaà räjarñayo viduù
  • sa käleneha mahatä
  • yogo nañöaù parantapa
  • This supreme science was thus received through
the chain of disciplic succession, and the
saintly kings understood it in that way. But in
course of time the succession was broken, and
therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.

11
Bg. In Parampara A boon for human society.
  • Bhagavad-Gita has to be accepted in
    Parampara,e.g. Knowledge in modern society
    received from bonafide university.
  • Bhagavad-Gita by whims of mental speculator,
simply waste of time,e.g. liking honey bottle
    from outside

12
Text 3
  • sa eväyaà mayä te 'dya
  • yogaù proktaù purätanaù
  • bhakto 'si me sakhä ceti
  • rahasyaà hy etad uttamam
  • That very ancient science of the relationship
with the Supreme is today told by Me to you
because you are My devotee as well as My friend
and can therefore understand the transcendental
    mystery of this science.

13
Qualification to understand Bg.
  • Must be a devotee of Krsna,Bhakto asi me
  • Opposite is demon,Vishnu bhakta bhave daiva,
    asuras tad viparyay.
  • This is very same science and nothing new is
    invented by Lord Krishna.
  • Similarly, same old Hare Krishna Maha-mantra
brought by Lord Chaitanya, nothing new in that.
