What Is Plagiarism?
  • Merriam Webster Definition to steal and pass
    off the ideas or words of another as ones own
    use anothers production without crediting the
    source
  • Other Definitions for Plagiarism a form of
    intellectual property violation the act of
    taking someone elses words, writing, or ideas

  • Plagiarism is often complicated to classify
  • Act of cheating and it contains an assortment of
    information from failure to use proper citation.
  • Plagiarism is not always planned. Most times,
    students who plagiarize do it
    UNINTETIONALLY

What Are Examples Of Plagiarism?
  • In 1842, the Ottoman Empire divided Mount
    Lebanon administratively, creating a Christian
    district in the north and an area under Druze
    control in the south (p.140 Collelo).
  • By custom, the president is always a Maronite
    Christian and a Sunni Muslim always takes the
    role as Prime Minister (p. 155 Browne).
  • By vote, 57 of these are from sects of Muslims.

How Can Plagiarism Be Prevented?
  • Make sure to use your own words and ideas
  • Always give credit for copied, adapted, or
    paraphrased material
  • Avoid making minor cosmetic changes to others
    work and not citing
  • Always cite words and ideas that were new to you
    before you did research

Other Preventions
  • Find out what documentation style your professor
    wants you to use
  • If an idea or fact is not common knowledge, it
    MUST be cited!!!
  • Always use quotation marks around any passages
    that are in the exact words of the source
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, CITE IT!!!!

Towson Universities Policy On Plagiarism- 1st
conviction
  • If student is guilty of submitting plagiarized
    work for a grade, they may receive the following
    penalties(1st conviction)
  • 1)a revision of the work in question and/or
    completion of alternative work, with or without
    a grade reduction
  • 2) a reduced grade (including "F" or zero) for
    the assignment
  • 3) a reduced grade (including "F") for the
    entire course
  • Letter to Judicial Affairs-7 years

How Does One Make An Appeal?
  • Letter of Appeal
  • Department Chair meeting after 5 days
  • Faculty meeting
  • Decision within 5 days
  • Decision sent to Judicial Affairs and the Dean of
    Towson

Decisions based upon 1. Nature and seriousness
of event 2. Injury or damage resulting from
misconduct 3. The students
prior disciplinary record

What Have We Learned?
  • DONT PLAGIARIZE!!!!!
  • Plagiarizing can get you suspended or even
    expelled from College. This can affect future
    career choices and opportunities. Dont get
    yourself into this predicament.
  • CITE all words, ideas and phrases that are not
    common knowledge.
