  • LIFE WAS DIFFERENT

2
In Victorian Britain it was hard forPOOR CHILDREN
  • If anyone in the family got the flu the
  • children could catch it more quickly than the
  • adults. This was because the whole family would
  • share one small room between them. Sometimes
  • there were 12 people in a
  • family.
  • If you think this is bad look at this

3
Working Children
  • During Victorian times children worked, just like
our parents do now. Some common jobs included
  • TRAPPER
  • Pull the doors in the mine age5
  • MILL WORKER
  • Collect cotton from underneath
  • machine age7
  • CHIMNEY SWEEP
  • Clean chimneys- age 6 - boys

Education
  • In the early years of the Victorian Era, there
was no education system. At this time not many
children of poor communities went to school. The
teachers carried out regular canings to naughty
pupils and their names were written inside the
punishment book which every school kept.

Queen Victoria
  • Queen Victoria was born in 1819 and became queen
when she was only 18. Her Uncle had died in the
night of June 19th 1837 so making her queen. When
she turned 21 she married her cousin Albert and
they had 9 children. When Albert died in 1861
Queen Victoria went into mourning and shut
herself away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She
    died in 1901.

People that Helped
  • LORD SHAFTESBURY
  • In 1842 the mines act prevented children from
working underground, then in 1876 the minimum
working age was increased to 10.
  • He also fought for chimney sweeps to be banned
but it wasnt until 1875 that it was passed
    through parliament.
  • DR BARNADO
  • In 1870 DR Barnado estimated around 30,000
children were sleeping on the streets. So later
in the year he set up his first home for children
in East London. He also became famous, for his
    care and dedication.

But life changed!!!!
  • Because of the people who helped, life today is
much better, although there are still children on
the streets, now most are well looked after too.
