4
Project History
  • Senate Bill 1953 (SB 1953)
  • Passed in 1994 following Northridge Earthquake
  • Hospitals must reach certain structural
categories by particular deadlines set forth by
    the State of California
  • Next category SPC-2 (Structural Performance
    Category 2)
  • Deadline January 1, 2008 (UCSF Medical Center
    has a 2-year extension to January 1, 2010)
  • All general acute-care Hospitals in California
must meet the SB 1953 mandates
  • Moffitt Hospital Structural Deficiencies
  • Moffitt is structurally connected to MSB
  • Moffitt and MSB are seismically weakened by this
    connection
  • Once buildings are seismically separated, they
will both be better able to resist seismic
    activities

5
Project Scope
  • ADA/Accessibility Upgrades
  • Data Closet Relocations
  • Seismic Separation of MSB/Moffitt and MSB/Cole
    Hall

6
Project Scope
  • Accessible Restrooms
  • State required Accessible Restrooms on every
other floor of Moffitt and/or MSB, in the
vicinity of the Seismic Cut project.
  • Most cost effective solution to comply, with no
loss of assignable square footage, was to remodel
existing restrooms in MSB of floors 5, 7, 13.
  • This work was completed in the Fall of 2006.

Seismic Strengthening West(Duration June
2007 to May 2008)
  • For the building to perform better in an
earthquake, the west end of Increment 1 must be
made more flexible by cutting out larger
openings. A curtain wall will be placed where
    current windows are located.
  • These rooms cannot be occupied during
construction. The occupants will need to be
    relocated.
  • S301 Office S501 Office, S901 Break room
S1101 Break room S1301 Break room
  • The following room can be occupied, but there

  • To improve earthquake performance, the south wall
of the MSB Animal Tower will receive a new shear
wall mounted to the exterior of the building.
  • There is no interior reconfiguration in the
animal tower but there will be noise
  • and vibration disruption. During daytime hours,
so that sleep patterns are not
  • interrupted.
  • Any building services located between the Animal
tower and HSE will be disrupted. Including a
small closet on HSE 5 3 cold rooms in HSE4 will
be temporarily without cooling, and other
    miscellaneous temporary equipment relocations.
  • These rooms can remain occupied
  • S417, S449, S450
  • This room will have to be emptied during
    construction.
  • HSE 520C Office supplies
