Research Notes
2
Why is it important to take notes in an organized
manner?
  • You will need the publishing, title, and author
information to do your works cited (10 pts)
  • You will need to keep track of your information
to cite it properly using parenthetical notation
    (30 pts)
  • The better your research, the more details you
have, the more details, the better your voice for
    the content grade (100 pts)
  • By practicing taking notes, you will do better
with research needed for future essays and real
life research (100 X the amount of research
papers you will write for your entire life
research needed to get the job you want
research needed for your job all the raises you
will get because you do such a great job finding
information and keeping it in an organized manner)

3
Setting up your research page
  • Staple 2 pieces of paper together
  • Put your heading in the upper right hand corner
  • Put Research Notes on the title
  • Put the type of character you are doing on your
title too (ex Gypsy or Eva Braun)

4
On each piece of paper put the following
  • Type of research
  • Title
  • Author
  • Publisher/Name of Magazine or Newspaper
  • Date
  • Additional publishing info
  • Notes

5
Then create a chart
  • Page Information

  • Author Suzy E. Coleman
  • Publisher/Name of Magazine or Newspaper Houston
    Chronicle
  • Date 25 Feb. 1999
  • Additional publishing info Section A, Sunday
    edition

How it works
  • The books on the side table can be used. There
are different types of books (biography,
reference, regular research). They are numbered
in order. Return books from where you got them.
  • Use the index first, but be willing to hunt for
the term. EX. If you want to know about an
assassination attempt on Hitler, it may not be
listed under the A section. Look at the H
section, under Hitler and see if there is a
    special subindex.
  • Hitler, Adolf
  • Assassination attempt of

9
Computers
  • Three people can use the computers at a time.
  • You will NOT be looking at websites and instead
will look at EBSCO, an encyclopedia, or other
    database only for today.
  • You may need to change your search terms to
    narrow the field
  • When you find an article, make sure you write
down your publishing info on the top after you
    see the article is useful

10
Newspapers
  • Sometimes the next page will be with a different
stack so you may need to find your missing page
(proper order is numbered at the bottom)
  • Make sure you write down all the publishing info
    you can find!
  • Return to side table when done

11
Works Cited
  • We will be typing this up in the computer lab
    next week.
  • It is up to you to make sure you have all the
info you need by that date. (Thursday)
  • I will collect your research today to ensure it
does not go missing (thats how much Ms. B wants
to make sure you dont lose it!)
  • If you want to do additional research this
weekend, feel free to write out additional notes
pages. Remember Author, title, publishing info!

12
Notes on notes
  • You will not be quoting your sources so it is
okay to paraphrase your research (you dont have
    to write every word!)
  • Find 1-3 pieces of information you find useful
and then move on to the next source so you can
    find multiple sources
  • Make your goal for today to find 3 source (at
    least 1 book, 1 newspaper, 1 magazine article, 1
    biography, 1 reference book)
