Title: GRAPHICAL DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

1
GRAPHICAL DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
  • How do psychologists summarize their data
    pictorially?

2
BAR CHARTS
  • Shows data only for those categories that the
researcher is interested in comparing, e.g. two
or more conditions in an experiment

3
HISTOGRAMS
  • Shows data for all categories, even those with
zero values. The column width for each category
interval is equal so the area of the column is
proportional to the number of cases it contains
    of the sample

4
FREQUENCY POLYGON
  • Also known as a line graph, the frequency polygon
is similar to a histogram, except that it allows
two or more sets of data to be shown on the same
    graph.

5
PIE CHARTS
  • Pie charts show the proportion of all scores
gained by various categories. Proportions of the
pie chart are calculated by the following formula

6
PIE CHARTS
  • Degrees of score of x degrees
  • pie chart category of a circle
  • divided by total score

7
SCATTERGRAMS
  • Scattergrams plot pairs of scores against each
other to show their correlational relationship
  • Emergent patterns or trends in the data can be
calculated to show a line of best fit

8
NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
  • Normal distribution curves occur in the
    populations of many continuous psychological
variables and are involved in parametric
    statistics.
  • They are bell shaped and symmetrical at the mid
point where the mode, median and mean all fall

9
NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
  • The percentage of scores covered by the areas
between the standard deviations of the curve are
    known.
