Foldables
Chemical Reactions
Make the following Foldable to help you
understand chemical reactions.
19
Foldables
Fold a vertical sheet of paper in half lengthwise
20
Foldables
Cut along every third line of only the top layer
to form tabs.
21
Foldables
Label each tab.
22

Research Information
Before you read the chapter, write several
questions you have about chemical reactions on
the front of the tabs. As you read, add more
questions. Under the tabs of your Foldable,
write answers to the questions you recorded on
the tabs.

Reviewing Main Ideas
1
Formulas and Chemical Equations
  • Chemical reactions often cause observable
changes, such as change in color or odor, a
release or absorption of heat or light, or a
    release of gas.
  • A chemical equation is a shorthand method of
writing what happens in a chemical reaction.
Chemical equations use symbols to represent the
reactants and products of a reaction, and
sometimes show whether energy is produced or
    absorbed.

25
Reviewing Main Ideas
1
Formulas and Chemical Equations
  • The law of conservation of mass requires that the
same number of atoms of each element be in the
products as in the reactants of a chemical
equation. This is true in every balanced
    chemical equation.

26
Reviewing Main Ideas
2
Rates of Chemical Reactions
  • The rate of reaction is a measure of how quickly
    a reaction occurs.
  • All reactions have an activation energya certain
minimum amount of energy required to start the
    reaction.
  • The rate of a chemical reaction can be influenced
by the temperature, the concentration of the
reactants, and the exposed surface area of the
    reactant particles.

27
Reviewing Main Ideas
2
Rates of Chemical Reactions
  • Catalysts can speed up a reaction without being
used up. Inhibitors slow down the rate of
    reaction.
  • Enzymes are protein molecules that act as
    catalysts in your bodys cells.

Chapter Review
Question 1
There are catalysts inside your bodylarge
protein molecules that help speed up reactions
inside your cells and keep you alive. What are
these catalysts called?
A. enzymes B. inhibitors C. products D. reactants
29
Chapter Review
Answer
The answer is A.

Question 2
Many packaged foods you buy at the grocery store
include some kind of preservative that keeps the
contents fresh longer. Even without knowing what
the exact preservative is, you would assume that
it is some kind of _______.
31
Chapter Review
Answer
The answer is inhibitor. The spoiling process is,
in fact, a chemical reaction. The presence of an
inhibitor will decrease that reaction rate and
increase shelf life.
32

Question 3
Many kinds of food need to be refrigerated in
order to keep them from spoiling. Knowing what
you now know about chemistry, can you explain why
this is so?
33
Chapter Review
Answer
A decrease in temperature decreases reaction
rates. Since spoilage is a chemical reaction,
refrigeration of perishable food will slow down
its tendency to spoil.

Question 4
According to the law of the conservation of mass,
the mass of the _______ must be the same as the
mass of the _______.
35
Chapter Review
Answer
The mass of the products must be the same as the
mass of the reactants.

Question 5
Endothermic reactions _______ heat energy.
Answer
Endothermic reactions absorb heat energy.
37
Standardized Test Practice
Question 1
A greater surface area results in a(n)_______
reaction rate.
A. decreased B. increased C. unchanged D. visible
38
Standardized Test Practice
Answer
The answer is B. This is why breaking up a big
log into smaller pieces makes it more likely to
burn. A pile of smaller pieces has much more
surface area than one big log.
39
Standardized Test Practice
Question 2
Burning is an _______ chemical reaction.
A. endothermic B. exothermic C. exoskeletal D.
existential
40
Standardized Test Practice
Answer
The answer is B. Since heat is released the
chemical reaction causing it must be exothermic.
41
Standardized Test Practice
Question 3
Rusting is an example of an _______ chemical
reaction.
A. endothermic B. exothermic C. endogenous D.
exogamous
42
Standardized Test Practice
Answer
The answer is B. You cannot sense the heat being
released when iron rusts because of the slow
reaction rate. Still, it is an exothermic
chemical reaction.
43
Standardized Test Practice
Question 4
In reactions that absorb energy, the reactants
are _______.
A. less stable B. more stable C. perfected D.
unstable
44
Standardized Test Practice
Answer
The answer is B. The reactants are more stable
and their bonds have less energy than the bonds
of their products.
45
Standardized Test Practice
Question 5
Even if it isnt written into a chemical
equation, _______ is always part of any chemical
reaction.
A. energy B. sound C. tonality D. vibration
46
Standardized Test Practice
Answer
The answer is A. Energy may be needed to start
the reaction or it may be given off as a result
of the reaction, but it is always involved.
