Goals
  • a consistent level of support to all users
  • cross and formal training of staff
  • allow users to access their own accounts
from any workstation in any DOA location
  • reduce total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • Best practices ie. rebuild vs troubleshoot
  • Standard hardware software
  • quick, repeatable build processes
  • reduced maintenance risk
  • ability to forecast, based on usage trends

The defacto standard of measurement regarding the
cost of owning and operating a PC. Starts with
the sticker price on stuff and includes technical
support, maintenance, upgrades, help desk,
learning and peer support.TCO does not measure
benefits or value.

Benefits?
Hard reuse PCs 152 152,000 less
servers 11 37,000
TCO Best Practice
Soft less outages 2 site/mo 144,000 State
ratio 70-1 7 FTE 385,000
Better customer service by reduced complexity and
cost per transaction, improved network
availability and response to customer needs with
greater ease and speed. Quicker, better,
cheaper..
Yearly savings 718,000
Other PC rebuilds _at_ 2 vs 6 hrs. Software updates

How do we pay or whats a node count?
The DOA cost per node methodology is based on the
cost of the desired level of services, as
determined by the Governance Group, divided by
the number of network nodes. DOA has chosen to
limit the node cost to staff, housing/equipment
for staff and network software. Costs for
connectivity, desktop software, desktops
servers are borne by the using agency.

Network
  • A term that describes a lot of pieces that work
    together to create the whole.
  • 1. Physical connectivity - routers, wires,
  • switches, CSU/DSU(modem) etc.
  • 2. NOS - network operating system - servers and
    software
  • 3. Desktops software - O/S, MS Office, 3270
    software, database clients etc.
  • 4. Other servers, software devices

11
Our Network
  • 15 DOA divisions are in 72 sites in 19 cities
    from Barrow to Ketchikan.
  • 39 offices have their own servers
  • 61 offices are on the wan backbone. Others
    operate on dialup services.
  • Offices gradually upgrade to routed t1 Wan
backbone. IE. All PD this year..
  • The Wan requires a wire (dataphone) owned by
    multiple partners .
