• The Serial ATA International Organization
  (SATA-IO) maintains the specifications, promotes
  and markets the benefits of SATA and will create
  future interface features and specifications to
  carry storage into the next decade. SATA-IO will
  give members access to specifications, and plug
  fests while offering consumers access to
  educational material and member company

Multi-Lane Cabling

• Highly integrated Serial ATA x4 connector
  system (SFF-8087 for internal and
  SFF-8088/SFF-8470 for external)
• Significantly improves reliability over existing
  SATA cabling

Port Selector

• Active/Passive controller redundancy eliminates a
  single point of failure in a system
• Port Selector usually housed in a drive carrier
• PM silicon is integrated into a backplane design.
• Failover is Active/Passive and does not support
  multi-initiator
• Drives are unaware of the presence of a port
  selector

Port Multiplier (PM)

• A platform for one active host connection to
  communicate with multiple devices
• There is maximum fan-out of 15 device connections
• PM silicon is integrated into a backplane design.
• The Port Multiplier may not be cascaded to
  another PM
• If a PM is connected to a non-PM aware host, then
  only device 0 will be detected
