Objectives

• To appreciate the importance of images in web
  pages
• To have found, modified and inserted appropriate
  images into your home page
• To have used Fireworks to optimise images

The 3 Rs of using images

• Relevant
• specific to the purpose of your website
• Right Size
• avoid using large images - they take a long time
  to download, or images that are too small - they
  lose quality as you increase them in size
• Right Type
• only use .gif or .jpg image formats in your site

Distortion

• Try to avoid increasing the height or width of a
  picture in isolation as it can distort the
  picture. E.g.

Blurring (Pixelation)

• Avoid increasing a small picture in size - it can
  lose quality and blur. It's better to leave it
  like it is or get a bigger picture from the web.

Inserting images

• Images cannot be pasted into DreamWeaver
• Save the image first
• Then use Insert Image
• You can resize the image by dragging the corners
  or by typing in new values in the Properties
  section.
• Locate and insert images now

How big are your images?

• The Properties section shows the size
• The bigger the image, the longer to download
• Resizing an image does not make its file size
  smaller
• To resample (reduce the file size) of an image
  you have shrunk, use Optimize in Fireworks
• Optimise your images now
