24
The Need to Secure Your IT Infrastructure
25
Securing your IT Infrastructure
  • The only thing Constant about Change is Change
    itself.
  • Information Technology (IT) plays a critical role
    in supporting business objectives
  • IT infrastructures are becoming more and more
    highly connected
  • Additional factors are also affecting
    organisations
  • Legislation that stems from privacy concerns,
  • Financial obligations
  • Corporate governance

26
Securing your IT Infrastructure
  • Attacks are being mounted with increasing
    frequency

Industry-wide vulnerability disclosures by Common
Vulnerability Scoring System (v2) severity, by
half-year, 1H032H08
27
Securing your IT Infrastructure
  • 8.8 percent of vulnerabilities affected operating
systems 4.5 percent affected browsers 86.7
percent affected applications or other software

Security Breaches
  • These findings reinforce the need for appropriate
    data governance policies and procedures

Security breach incidents by type, expressed as
percentages of the total, 2H07 - 2H08
29
Associated Risks
30
Associated Risks
  • How long is a piece of String?
  • I haven't got a clue
  • A chain is only as strong as its weakest link
  • It's better to light a candle than curse the
    darkness

31
What and Why
32
Facts
  • The infection rate for Windows Vista is
significantly lower than that of its predecessor,
    Windows XP, in all configurations
  • The infection rate of Windows Server 2008 RTM is
52.6 percent less than that of its predecessor,
    Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • The higher the service pack level, the lower the
    rate of infection
  • Servers tend to have a lower effective attack
    surface

33
Building the Business Case
34
Objectives
  • Moving to a proactive security posture
  • Making security measurable
  • Mitigate the largest risks
  • Rather than applying scarce resources to all

Licensing Windows 7
  • And other key products

41
My Agenda
  • Basic licensing concepts
  • High level overview / food for thought
  • Licensing options for Windows 7
  • Windows 7 licensing assessment
  • Training considerations

42
Why is licensing important?
  • Important part of the solution
  • Essential to understand
  • Costly to get wrong
  • Each scenario is different
  • Many influences
  • Entitlement / install / usage / control /
    visibility

43
Licensing Basics
  • Desktop Applications
  • Servers
  • Windows 7 / Desktop Operating Systems

44
Desktop Applications
  • You must acquire a license for each device on or
from which you access or use the software

45
You may install any number of copies and any
prior version on the device or on a network
device to support that use..
You may access copies of the software installed
on a network device only from a device that has a
license for the software The device you use to
remotely access software must be licensed for
the same or higher edition, but not a lesser
edition
46
Server Licensing
  • License each instance of the server software that
you run on that server. You may run that
instance in a physical or virtual operating
    system environment on that server
  • Server / CAL or per Proc

47
Server and Client Access Licenses
  •
  • Device CAL
  • Licenses a device for use by any user to access
    instances of the server software
  •
  • User CAL
  • Licenses one user to use any device to access
    instances of the server software
  •
  • Version specific
  • Can run mix same price
  • One time swap
  • Tricky to manage
  • STD Enterprise versions

48
Tiered Server CAL Structure
Systems Management Server
49
External Connector License/Internet Sites
A license is required for each server where there
are unlimited numbers of users connecting to the
server, which are unknown to the company.
50
Per Proc Licensing
  • Per Processor
  • A license is required for each processor in the
    server that runs the software
  • For software running in physical operating system
environments, you must license each physical
    processor
  • For software running in virtual operating system
environments, you need to license only the
    virtual processors the software uses
  • You do not need CALs or EC licenses because Per
Processor licensing allows any number of users to
access the software from any number of devices.

52
A bit more to really confuse you...
  • Management Server licensing
  • User and OSE MLs (not CALs)
  • Licensing per OSE
  • Developer licensing
  • Licensing per Developer
  • Virtualisation
  • Different rules for different products
  • On-line service licensing
  • USL, DSL, SSL!

53
Licensing Windows 7
54
Desktop Operating Systemsper copy per device
license
  • License required for each device on or from which
you access or use the software
  • You may install only one copy on the device. You
may install that copy on the host operating
system or in a virtual hardware system
    (exceptions can apply)

55
If you acquire Software Assurance, you have
the right to use Windows 7 Enterprise on the
device instead of Windows Professional. This also
permits you during the term of your Software
Assurance coverage to run up to four additional
copies or instances on the device.
