Every Day Math Lesson 1-1
  • Introduction to the Student
  • Reference Book

2
Todays Objective
  • We are going to look at the structure (the way
the book is put together) of the Student
Reference Book (SRB) and Student Math Journal
    (SMJ).

3
Routines for Math Class
  • Every day, come to class ready to work
  • Bring your Student Reference Book (SRB)
  • Bring your Student Math Journal (SMJ)
  • Bring your completed homework
  • As soon as you come through the door for math
class, begin the task that is on the Smart Board.
  • Ask questions if you dont understand
  • Show your work
  • Be ready to share your thinking

4
Todays Opening Task
  • Turn to page 1 in your Student Journal and read
the welcome to Fifth Grade Everyday Mathematics
    letter.
  • Underline any words or terms that you do not know
or that you think are interesting.

5
What did you find interesting or wonder about the
welcome letter?
6
Mental Math Procedure
  • We do Mental Math so that you can practice
    thinking of answers automatically.
  • That means that when you hear a problem like 2 x
2, you can answer it quickly because you know the
    answer so well.
  • Before we begin, you need to write the numbers 1
through 8 on your whiteboard. Youll write your
answer next to the problem number.
  • During Mental Math, I will read the problem once.
You will write the answer on your whiteboard.
  • When we are done, you can see how many you were
    able to answer correctly.

7
Mental Math Write the answers to the problems
on your white board

Math Message
  • Now you need to turn to page 2 in your Student
    Math Journal.
  • Were going to abbreviate this by just listing
    the first letter SMJ.
  • Look through the SMJ for a couple of minutes and
look for things that are the same and different
    than your 4th grade SMJ.
  • Share what you found.

9
Your next job
  • Look at the Student Reference Book (SRB)
  • As you are reading, look for the different parts
of the book. There are lots and lots of
different features or structures to this book.
  • For example, if you look on page 443, what will
    you find?
  • How might the Index help you?

10
What did you find?
  • Look at page xi in your SRB.
  • Does anyone know what xi means?
  • It is the Roman numeral for the number 11!
Authors use the Roman numeral when they are
talking about pages that come before the main
    text.
  • Were going to read this together.

11
Find page 4 in your SRB
  • Its called Place Value for Whole Numbers.
  • Were going to work through the page together so
you can see how to use the SRB.
  • Make sure to Check Your Understanding by
completing the problems at the end of the
section. Use your whiteboard to show your work.

12
Page 4 in SRB Answers
  • What is the value of the 5 in each number?
  • 25,308
  • The 5 is in the thousands place so its 5,000
  • 74,546,002
  • The 5 is in the hundred thousands place so its
    500,000
  • 643,057
  • The 5 is in the tens place so its 50
  • 2,450,609
  • The 5 is in the ten thousands place so its
    50,000
  • Did you notice that the answers were all on p.
    433?

13
Get ready for a scavenger hunt
  • What is a scavenger hunt?
  • You need both the SRB and the SMJ.
  • Turn to page 2 in your SMJ the floppy covered
    book.
  • Were going to read the instructions for the
Student Reference Book Scavenger Hunt together.
  • Working with the person sitting next to you,
complete the Scavenger Hunt on pages 2 3 of
    your SMJ.

How do you score your Scavenger Hunt??
  • We are trying to reach 90 points.
  • You score 3 points for each correct answer.
  • You score 5 points for each correct page number
    in the SRB.

17
Score by question
18
Final Score
  • So you need to total up the points you scored for
solving the problem with the total you received
    for finding the correct page.
  • Who followed the instruction that was on page 1
of the SMJ? If you did write a secret number in
the top right-hand corner of page 2 in the SMJ,
    give yourself 10 more points.
  • Whats your score?

19
Next, please turn to the Math Box on page 4 of
the SMJ
  • Complete the Math Boxes without a calculator and
    on your own.
  • This is independent practice so you cant help
    one another.
