204 Local Wellness Policies Local School
Divisions must establish a local school wellness
policy for the 2006-2007 School Year

Why the Focus on Local Wellness Policies?
  • The percentage of overweight children aged 611
    has more than doubled in the past 20 years
  • Overweight children and adolescents are more
    likely to remain overweight or become obese
    adults and develop chronic disease
  • One in three American children born in 2000 will
    develop diabetes in their lifetime
  • Overweight children are less likely to achieve
    academic success

Proposed Policy
  • Newport News Public School is committed to
    providing school environments that promote and
    protect childrens health, well-being, and
    ability to learn by supporting proper nutrition,
    nutrition education and regular physical activity
    as part of the total learning experiences for all
    students.

  • Students, staff, parents and the community will
    be engaged in all aspects of the wellness policy
  • All students in grades PreK-12 will have
    opportunities, support, and encouragement to be
    physically active on a regular basis.

  • Foods and beverages sold or served at school will
    meet or exceed the nutrition recommendations of
    the U. S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Students will be provided with affordable and
    nutritious foods with adequate time to eat
    accommodating religious, ethnic and cultural
    diversity

  • To the maximum extent practicable, all schools in
    our district will participate in available
    federal school meal programs.
  • Schools will provide nutrition education and
    physical education to foster lifelong habits of
    healthy eating and physical activity
  • The superintendent may designate a committee to
    develop procedures to implement the policy over
    an appropriate timeline
