A complete sentence has
  • a subject
  • a verb (predicate)
  • enough information to make a complete thought

Complete Sentence 1. The blue dog went into the
maze. 2. The dog is blue. Simple Subject dog
the person, place or thing the sentence is
about Simple Verb went/is explains what the
subject does (action) or what the subject
is (state of being).

Sentences may have two or more subjects (called
compound subjects). Example Larry, Curly,
and Mo came out of the maze.

Sentences may have more than one verb (called
compound verbs). Example Three big dogs
wiggled out and wagged their tails.

  • Clauses
  • A clause is a group of words that has a subject
    and a verb. There are two types of clauses
  • Independent
  • Dependent

An independent clause (also called a main
clause) is a simple sentence. It has all three
elements of a sentence. Example The three dogs
sat in the boat. 1. Subject dogs 2. Verb
sat 3. Complete Thought

A dependent clause (also called a subordinate
clause) is not a complete sentence although
it does have a subject and verb. Example
While the three dogs sat in the boat, two of the
dogs played checkers.

Practice Identify the dependent and independent
clause. 1. The three dogs that I told you
about wore party hats. 2. While one dog
contemplated his move, the other dog ate his
sucker.
