RESPIRATORY PROTECTION TRAINING
2
OBJECTIVES
  • Requirements of the Respirator Standard per OSHA
    Standard 29 CFR 1910.134
  • Identification of hazards at Emory that warrant
    use of respiratory protection
  • Limitations /capabilities of the respirator
  • Proper use / fit of the respirator
  • Use of respirator in emergency situations
  • Maintenance / storage of respirators
  • Medical signs/symptoms that may limit or prevent
    effective use of respirators

3
29 CFR 1910.134
  • The OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard requires
the employer to train his/her employees annually
on the proper use, maintenance and fit of the
    respirator
  • The standard also requires that the employers
ensure that his/her employees are able to
    demonstrate knowledge of the training
  • Therefore, there will be a TEST

4
Written Respiratory Protection Program
  • Required whenever employee is required to wear a
    respirator
  • Must include
  • Risk Assessment
  • Medical Evaluations
  • Annual Fit Test Testing
  • Annual Training
  • Must be evaluated annually

5
Risk Assessment
  • Requested by Manager
  • Conducted by appropriate EHSO program
  • Conducted prior to issuance of a respirator
  • Provides information as to the type of respirator
    that must be worn

6
Emory Exposure/Job Functions Requiring Respirators
  • Tuberculosis
  • Asbestos
  • Airborne Pathological Pathogens
  • MPTP
  • HAZMAT
  • Anti Riot Gases
  • Chemical Dust Exposure

7
OSHA Standard Question 1
  • OSHA requires a written respirator program
whenever an employee wears a respirator, even if
not required by the employer or the standard

8
OSHA Standard Answer 1
  • OSHA only requires that a written respiratory
protection program be developed when respirators
are required to be worn by either the OSHA
    respirator standard or the employer

9
Job Functions Question 2
  • Respirators are required to be worn at Emory
University in all of the following situations
    except
  • TB exposure
  • MPTP exposure
  • HAZMAT
  • Animal dander exposure

10
Job Functions Answer 2
  • At Emory, respirators are required to be worn
while working in areas where exposure to
tuberculosis or MTPT is possible or when working
on the Universitys HAZMAT team. However,
respirators are not required when exposed to
    animal dander.

11
Medical Evaluations
  • Conducted by Employee Health Services (EHS)
  • Must be provided prior to the issuance of a
    respirator
  • Determines whether an employee is capable of
    wearing a negative pressure respirator

12
TYPES OF RESPIRATORS WORN AT EMORY
  • N95
  • Half Mask
  • Full Face
  • PAPR
  • Emergency Response
  • Avon FM-12 NBC

13
Assigned Protection Factors
14
Maximum Use Concentration (MUC)
  • Respirators are selected for employee use that
maintain the employee's exposure to the hazardous
substance, when measured outside the respirator,
    at or below the MUC
  • MUC Assigned Protection Factor (APF) X
    Exposure Limit

15
Proper Fit of Respirator
  • There should be nothing between the respirator
    and the users skin
  • Glasses should be worn over the respirator straps
  • Men should be clean shaven
  • Hair should be pulled back and away from the face

16
Medical Evaluation Question 3
  • At Emory, employees required to wear N-95
respirators are not required to be medically
    evaluated

17
Medical Evaluation Answer 3
  • All employees required to wear respirators at
Emory must be medically evaluated by Employee
Health Services to determine if they are
medically capable of wearing a respirator

18
Maximum Use Concentration Question 4
  • At Emory respirators are selected for employee
use that maintain the employees exposure to a
hazardous substance, when measured outside the
respirator, at or below the maximum use
    concentration

19
Maximum Use Concentration Answer 4
  • Respirators are selected for employee use that
maintain the employee's exposure to the hazardous
substance, when measured outside the respirator,
    at or below the MUC
  • MUC Assigned Protection Factor (APF) X
    Exposure Limit

20
Proper Donning of Respirator
21
Proper Fit of Respirator
22
Fit Testing
  • EHSO provides fit testing to employees
  • Must be conducted annually
  • Will not fit test without proof of medical
    clearance by EHS

23
Fit Test Procedure
  • Sensitivity Test
  • To ensure you can actually smell and taste the
saccharin solution, we will spray the sensitivity
solution (a mixture of sugar and water) in your
    breathing zone
  • We will continue to spray the solution until you
    taste or smell it
  • The number of times we had to spray before you
smelled or tasted the solution will be recorded
    on the Fit Test Form

24
Fit Test Procedure
  • Fit Testing
  • The tester will have you don your respirator and
    conduct the positive/negative check
  • The fit testing hood will be placed over your
    head
  • The tester will spray the saccharin solution into
the fit testing hood as you are asked to perform
    the following tasks
  • Breathe normally
  • Deep breaths
  • Exaggerated nod
  • Turn your head for side to side
  • Read the Rainbow Passage

25
Use and Limitations of Respirators
  • N-95 dust and mist
  • Half-mask and full face chemicals, dust, mist,
    fumes, gases, vapors
  • Supplied Air Respirators - chemicals with low
warning properties (mercury and CO) and IDLH
    atmospheres

26
Proper Fit Question 5
  • Men who wear a beard for religious reasons are
exempt from the clean shaven policy for negative
    pressure respirators

27
Proper Fit Answer 5
  • No one is exempt from being clean shaven while
    wearing the negative pressure respirator.
However, you may opt to wear a loose fitting
positive pressure respirator instead, if your
employer is willing to pay for it

28
Frequency of Testing Question 6
  • Fit testing is only required before the initial
use of a respirator or after the gain or loss of
    20 lbs or more

29
Frequency of Testing Answer 6
  • Fit testing must be conducted annually

30
Inspection of Respirators
  • All respirators shall be inspected prior to use
    and while cleaning
