23.3 Solubility
  • Unit 8 Chapter 23
  • CPO Science
  • Courtney Lewis
  • Stapley Junior High School

2
Answer the Following Question
  • When you open a can of soda at room temperature,
why is it more likely to fizz and spill over than
a can that has been refrigerated?

3
Solubility of Gases
  • Gases dissolved in liquids
  • Oxygen in lakes, rivers, and oceans
  • Gives fish the oxygen they need
  • CO2 in soda like 7Up and Diet Coke
  • Pop bottled under pressure and the CO2 is
    dissolved in the liquid

4
How much will dissolve?
  • Equilibriumsolute going in and out of solution
  • Unsaturatedmeans solvent can dissolve more
    solute
  • Saturatedmeans solvent cant dissolve any more
    solute, just the right amount
  • Supersaturatedmeans solvent cant dissolve any
more and there is extra solute, ex. Rock candy

5
Activity
  • Person A Explain to your partner why is it that
fish stay in the deeper parts of rivers and lakes
    on a warm day.
  • Person B Explain to your partner the difference
    between unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated
    solutions.

6
