Browser Security

• Internet Explorer is not known as a safe browser
• IE7 strived to fix many of the security flaws in
  previous versions, however still is very unsecure
• Mozilla Firefox is a much more secure Browser
• Opera is another secure alternative

• Outlook and Outlook Express
• Not as secure as competing clients
• Mozilla Thunderbird
• More secure than Outlook or Express
• Opera email client
• Also more secure than Outlook or Express

• Internet technologies allow hackers access to
  more systems than typical programs do
• Keeping Flash, Java, Microsoft Silverlight,
  Shockwave, and all other internet-based programs
  up-to-date reduces your risk of being attacked

• Office programs allow you to choose whether you

• Macros are instructions that are made to automate

Unnecessary Programs

• Having unused programs on your computer increases
  your risk of being attacked
• More programs more ways for intruders to get

• Arent really deleted
• Emptying the recycle bin or trash folder doesnt
  delete files
• To ensure files are completely erased you must
  use a Wiping program
• Physically resets data on hard drive to 0s
• Possible to recover data still
• Very expensive/time intensive process

Browser History

• All browsers keep track of what sites youve
  visited (by default)
• Can be disabled
• You can clear your history
• Doesnt really get rid of the info though
• Index.dat
• Windows keeps track of all the sites youve
  visited in a special file called index.dat
• Only specialized programs can clear this info

• No, theyre not yummy
• Cookies store data on your computer, sometimes
  permanently
• They include preferences for web sites
• Google stores a cookie with your search
  preferences, for instance
• Cookies can track your web-browsing habits
• Advertisers like doing this

The Registry

• Huge database used by Windows
• Stores tons of personal information
• Do NOT edit the Registry unless you are sure you
  know what youre changing
• Small errors in the registry can cause Windows to
  function improperly or cease to function at all

• CCleaner is a useful program that can clear much
  of the personal information from the registry
• Clears the index.dat file, too
• Recent documents are stored in the registry too
• Telling Windows not to keep track of the info,
  doesnt stop it from storing it in the registry

Secret Identifiers

• Microsoft products contain an unique
  identification number
• This GUID (Globally Unique ID) can theoretically
  be used to trace you on the internet
• Office embeds this GUID in all of your documents
• Theres a tool that randomizes this GUID
• OpenOffice does not embed the GUID in your
  documents

• There are 9 or more ways that Internet Explorer
  (IE) tracks your behavior

• Windows keeps a lot of installation files, files
  you open from the internet, and other files that
  may only be used once
• These files can contain personal information
• Temporary files are easily cleared by programs
  such as CCleaner
