The need
  • China has a population of 1.3 billion people
  • Estimated 130 million have hearing loss
  • 28 million are children
  • Audiology is a new field in that large country
  • Earlier teaching in Chengdu (funding ended)
  • Teaching at UG training program in Beijing
  • More now

Our mission
  • Two prongs
  • Test/manage hearing loss in one or more orphanage
  • Over 60 children tested first visit
    approximately the same on second visit
  • Includes foster children, babies in nursery, and
    other residents of the orphanage
  • Train staff (both orphanage and school) to
    provide follow-up services and rehab services

    aids medical doctor trained in follow-up

Interim trip
  • Ruth did a follow-up visit in December of 2004 to
    the orphanage
  • The medical doctor kept good records to compare
    with earlier findings
  • A number of surgically repaired ears
  • Good PR opportunity (they realized we didnt mean
    this to be a one-time effort)
