Title: Isaac Asimov vs' Bob Dylan

1
Isaac Asimov vs. Bob Dylan
En España
  • Robert, Haris, Dustin

2
Once upon a time, Isaac Asimov and Bob Dylan were
in Spain.  They did not like each other. But,
because they were in Spain, they could not speak
English. Therefore, because they did not know
their Spanish direct and indirect object
pronouns, they could not have an articulate
argument.
3
"What are Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns
(IOPs and DOPs)?" asked Bob Dylan
  • Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs)
  • the object that receives the direct action of the
verb to whom or for whom
  • Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs)
  • the object that is the recipient or beneficiary
of the action of the verb who or what is
    receiving the action

4
"Okay...but how would I use them in a sentence?"
asked a frustrated Bob Dylan.
"Here, let me draw you up this table of pronoun
usage," replied Asimov.
DOPs meme teyou lo/lait/him/her nosus osyou
(all) los/lasthem
IOPs meto/for me teto/for you leto/for
him/her nosto/for us osto/for you
(all) lesto/for them
5
"But the most important thing to know is how to
use these in a proper sentence," he
continued.  "There are actually five different
positions that these pronouns can be in"
  • Before a conjugated verb
  • At the end of an infinitive
  • At the end of a gerund ("-ing" verb)
  • At the end of a affirmative command
  • Before a negative command

And dont forget, if you add one or more direct
or indirect object pronouns to the end of verb
form so that its at least three syllables long,
you might need to place an accent, usually on the
third-to-last syllable in order to maintain the
original stress.
6
"Oh, I think I've got it now. Let me give it a
try," he responded. "If I said, 'Isaac no
tiene habilidades,it would mean the same thing
as, 'Isaac no las tiene.' I could tell you to
stop writing and do more useful things with life
'Isaac, haz otras cosas, which would mean the
same thing as, Isaac, hazlas.'
7
"Right, but a better sentence would be, 'Bob no
está comprando regalos buenos. It would mean the
same as, 'Bob no está comprándolos. Or,
Bob no puedes dar regalos buenos, which is
also Bob no puedes darlos. "Or, an even
better one, 'Bob Dylan, no escribas canciónes
malas.' It would mean the same thing as, 'Bob, no
las escribe.'"
8
"Or, how about a little taste of these
IOPs! 'Isaac Asimov está dando problemas al
mundo,' would be the same as, 'Isaac Asimov
está dándole problemas.'" "Or, if I wanted to
make you share for once. 'Isaac, da los libros a
su amigos,' which is also, 'Isaac, dales los
libros. Of course, youre such a bad
writer no one reads your stuff anyway. And you
talk too much. Isaac habla tanto a su amigo.
Which is also 'Isaac le habla tanto.
9
You must be crazy! Dont write those horrible
songs of yours its getting to your head 'Bob,
no escribas canciones horribles a mi,'  which
is, 'Bob, no me escribas canciones
horribles. I can also say, Yo voy a dar
un libro a mi hija. Or Yo voy a darle un
libro.
10
"Wait just a minute here Asimov. If youre so
smart, tell me how I use both types of pronouns
in the same sentence."
"When using both types of pronouns, the indirect
object pronoun will always come first."
"Well that sounds easy..."
"Well it's a bit tricky Bob, because when both
direct and indirect pronouns start with the
letter "L," the indirect object pronoun must
change to "se."
11
"For example, if I said, 'Don't sing songs to
people,' it would translate to, 'No se las
cantes.'
So if I wanted to respond, 'Give me your
worst.', I could say, 'Dámelo.'"
And then I could say, You cant write him a
song', With No puedes escribírsela' Right?
12
I have no need for writing such barbaric things
as songs. Science fiction is for logical,
civilized men. I write letters about them to my
wife Yo escribo una carta a mi esposa. Or
Yo se las escribo.
Science fiction is for losers, thus I am not
reading your books to my friends. I can say that
again for you, just to rub it in, this time in
Spanish 'No está leyéndoselos."
13
Can You Do It The Way Bob and Isaac Can?
