associated with the use of alcohol or drugs.

    issue may be)

    help with the problem.

AOD Screening Process at Juvenile Court (Cont.)
Mondays and Thursdays WARDS are screened

relationship with the child and may act as the
parent (parens patriae). These cases are placed
on active supervision either at home, with a
relative, or the youth is removed from the home.
Based on screening results, minors are referred
for education or treatment
Wednesdays Non-WARDS are screened
Based on screening results, minors are referred
for education, treatment or Early Intervention

EIJDDC is not an option for WARDS as WARDS do not
meet the target population criteria for that
program.

Adolescent Alcohol and other Drug Preliminary
Screening

Adolescent Alcohol and Other Drug Preliminary
Screening
Purpose
Screening is the first step in identifying a
potential alcohol and/or drug issue, the severity
of the issue and making an appropriate referral
for education or treatment. The screening is
centered on the adolescent and all aspects of the
persons life. The screening will also indicate
if the adolescent has other problems that could
be addressed. When screening turns up red
flags that indicate that the adolescent may have
serious alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems,
the youth will be referred for a comprehensive
assessment.
19
Adolescent Alcohol and Other Drug Preliminary
Screening
The Importance of Screening and Assessment
Early identification of alcohol and other drug
(AOD) problems among adolescents, followed by
appropriate assessment and intervention has the
potential for accomplishing the following
  • Enhancing and improving the young persons
    quality of life
  • Increasing the young persons participation in
    society
  • Reducing burden on the criminal justice system
  • Providing cost effective referrals for needed
    services

20
Adolescent Alcohol and Other Drug Preliminary
Screening
Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment
  • Is more comprehensive than screening
  • Is used to determine severity of problems
  • Assesses a wide range of life issues
  • Assesses strengths and problematic issues
  • Includes developmental and mental health status
  • Incorporates high risk behaviors

A referral for an alcohol and other drug
assessment will be made to an adolescent alcohol
and drug treatment provider following the
screening which determines the level of treatment
that is recommended
