Elementary School Why Philo Haley went through
the ESL program as a 1st grader and when she
heard about the opportunity to give something
back to community, the first person that popped
into her head was Mrs. OBrien Merrill.

Project Summary Three Brunswick High seniors
Philo Haley, Elaina Malis and Kate McLaughlin did
a Service Learning project at the Coffin
Elementary School. They worked with six 3rd grade
students, who were in ESL the English as a Second
Language Program. The High School students helped
them build a kamishibai story that the ESL
students later shared with their third grade
classes. The project helped the ESL students
sharpen their skills in reading, writing, and
taught the other third grade classes about world
culture.
