Title: Safety Using

1
  • Safety Using
  • Pressure Washers

2
What is a Pressure Washer?
  • A power tool that sprays water at high pressures
  • Water flows from a source (hose) through a wand
with a nozzle at the end that controls how much
    the water spreads
  • Electric and gas versions

3
Pressure Washer Uses
  • Used to clean large, sturdy surfaces
  • 1000 to 1500 PSI -- Washing a car, bicycle, lawn
    furniture, grill
  • 1400 to 1850 PSI -- Cleaning patio, small deck
  • 2000 to 3000 PSI -- Cleaning a large deck,
    washing siding
  • 2800 to 4000 PSI -- Cleaning stained concrete,
    stripping paint
  • By comparison, a garden hose delivers about 40
    PSI.

4
Risks
  • Spray can cause lacerations
  • Spray can throw debris
  • Electric shock
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

5
Facts
  • Around 3,000 people head to hospitals each year
    for pressure-washer injuries
  • Chemical burns to the eyes, skin lacerations
    thermal burns and electrocution.
  • Most injuries are to the extremities
  • Can also damage the items you're trying to clean
if you get the nozzle too close

6
Take Precautions
  • Never point a pressure washer at yourself or
    others
  • Never attempt to push or move objects with spray
    from the washer
  • Never use a gasoline powered washer in an
    enclosed space
  • Always test the ground fault circuit interrupter
(circuit breaker or outlet) before using a
    pressure washer

7
Take Precautions
  • If an extension cord must be used, keep the
pressure washers power cord connection out of
    any standing water
  • Never allow children to operate a pressure
washer. Keep children at a safe distance when an
adult is using a pressure washer

8
Personal Protective Equipment
  • Wear rubber-soled shoes that provide some
    insulation
  • Always wear eye-protection
  • Wear ear protection
