2Overview John 201-20
- Mary Magdalene finds the tomb empty(201,2)
- Peter and John run to the tomb and find only
grave clothes (3-7) - John believes (8)
- But they do not yet understand the Scripture (9,
10) - Mary Magdalene sees the resurrected Christ (11 -
18) - The disciples see the resurrected Christ (19,20)
3Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb
- John 201
- Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene
came early to the tomb, while it was still dark,
and saw the stone already taken away from the
tomb.
4Peter and John hear the report
- John 202, 3
- So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the
other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to
them, They have taken away the Lord out of the
tomb, and we do not know where they have laid
Him. So Peter and the other disciple went forth,
and they were going to the tomb.
5A race to the tomb
- John 204, 5
- The two were running together and the other
disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to
the tomb first and stooping and looking in, he
saw the linen wrappings lying there but he did
not go in.
6This is not a robbery scene
- John 206, 7
- And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and
entered the tomb and he saw the linen wrappings
lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on
His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but
rolled up in a place by itself.
7Theme in John to believe
- John 208
- So the other disciple who had first come to the
tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.
8This lack of understanding will be resolved
- John 209, 10
- For as yet they did not understand the
Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
So the disciples went away again to their own
homes. - John 222
- So when He was raised from the dead, His
disciples remembered that He said this and they
believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus
had spoken.
9Mary cries in anguish
- John 2011, 12
- But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping
and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into
the tomb and she saw two angels in white
sitting, one at the head and one at the feet,
where the body of Jesus had been lying.
10She thought the tomb had been violated
- John 2013, 14
- And they said to her, Woman, why are you
weeping? She said to them, Because they have
taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they
have laid Him. When she had said this, she
turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and
did not know that it was Jesus.
11Jesus calls Mary by name
- John 2015, 16
- Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom are you seeking? Supposing Him to be the
gardener, she said to Him, Sir, if you have
carried Him away, tell me where you have laid
Him, and I will take Him away. Jesus said to
her, Mary! She turned and said to Him in
Hebrew, Rabboni! (which means, Teacher).
12The ascension is important in John
- John 2017
- Jesus said to her, Stop clinging to Me, for I
have not yet ascended to the Father but go to My
brethren and say to them, I ascend to My Father
and your Father, and My God and your God.
13Mary is a witness of the resurrected Lord
- John 2018
- Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the
disciples, I have seen the Lord, and that He
had said these things to her.
14Peace is shalom well-being, salvation
- John 2019
- So when it was evening on that day, the first
day of the week, and when the doors were shut
where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to
them, Peace be with you.
15Peace is shalom well-being, salvation
- John 2021, 26
- So Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you
as the Father has sent Me, I also send you. . .
. After eight days His disciples were again
inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the
doors having been shut, and stood in their midst
and said, Peace be with you.
16The disciples experience great joy
- John 2020
- And when He had said this, He showed them both
His hands and His side. The disciples then
rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
17Implications and Applications
- 1) Johns point is that we should believe
- 2) Jesus preached peace which means salvation
- 3) The rejoicing that began with the apostles
goes on until now we should rejoice as well
181) Johns point is that we should believe
- John 2027, 28
- Then He said to Thomas, Reach here with your
finger, and see My hands and reach here your
hand and put it into My side and do not be
unbelieving, but believing. Thomas answered and
said to Him, My Lord and my God!
191) Johns point is that we should believe
- John 2031
- but these signs have been written so that you
may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God and that believing you may have life in His
name.
202) Jesus preached peace which means salvation
- Ephesians 215b-17
- . . . so that in Himself He might make the two
into one new man, thus establishing peace, and
might reconcile them both in one body to God
through the cross, by it having put to death the
enmity. And He came and preached peace to you who
were far away, and peace to those who were near
212) Jesus preached peace which means salvation
- Isaiah 5719, 21
- Creating the praise of the lips. Peace, peace to
him who is far and to him who is near," Says the
Lord, and I will heal him . . . There is no
peace, says my God, for the wicked.
222) Jesus preached peace which means salvation
- Isaiah 527
- How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him
who brings good news, Who announces peace And
brings good news of happiness, Who announces
salvation, And says to Zion, Your God reigns!
233) The rejoicing that began with the apostles
goes on until now we should rejoice as well
- John 1622
- Therefore you too have grief now but I will see
you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no
one will take your joy away from you. - Philippians 44
- Rejoice in the Lord always again I will say,
rejoice!
243) The rejoicing that began with the apostles
goes on until now we should rejoice as well
- 1Peter 18
- and though you have not seen Him, you love Him,
and though you do not see Him now, but believe in
Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible
and full of glory,
