Title: THE MITOCHONDRION

1
THE MITOCHONDRION
  • The Power Plant
  • of the Cell

Note One structure is called a mitochondrion.
Two or more are called mitochondria.
2
The Plant Cell
  • The Mitochondrion
  • Where food is burned to release energy
  • Needs oxygen
  • Site of Cellular Respiration

3
Your Function
  • Site of Cellular Respiration
  • Use oxygen to break up food molecules (glucose)
    releasing energy.
  • Release carbon dioxide and water as waste
    products.

4
What Happens Here
  • The Respiration Reaction
  • glucose oxygen ? carbon dioxide water
    energy

C6H12O6 6O2 ? 6CO2 6H2O energy

Job Description
  • Get 6 oxygen (O2) molecules from the cytoplasm.
  • Get 1 glucose (C6H12O6) molecule from the
    cytoplasm.
  • Pull the glucose molecule apart.
  • Turn your light on to show the release of energy.
  • Take the carbon atoms and make as many molecules
of carbon dioxide (CO2) as you can.
  • Take the hydrogen atoms and make as many
molecules of water (H2O) as you can.
  • Have the cytoplasm carry the carbon dioxide
molecules to the cell membrane where they can be
    released.
  • Have the cytoplasm carry the water molecules to
    the vacuole for storage.
