Purpose
  • Assist tenants in developing or enhancing
    leadership skills
  • Provide opportunity for tenants to use/practice
    skills
  • Create a group of tenant leaders that can work
    within supportive/affordable housing to train
    other tenants.

Understanding Adult Learning
  • People learn in different ways
  • Different methods work better for different
    people
  • Learning in any group will depend on the design
    of the session

  • Tell participants what they must learn so they
    can HEAR it
  • Show participants what they must learn so they
    can SEE it
  • Let participants try out what they must learn so
    they can DO it

  • Adults learn best
  • When motivated, not coerced or forced
  • When session is conducted as a partnership
  • When learning is interactive and hands on
  • When they know the purpose (big picture) and
    ideas are reinforced
  • When their attention and energy are engaged and
    focused

Before the Meeting
  • Think about the Purpose make sure its CLEAR.
  • What is the outcome
  • What will be produced or accomplished
  • Prepare an Agenda to fit the Purpose.
  • Make sure Key Participants are present.
  • Send invitations at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • Its nice to send a reminder that will arrive
    (call/e-mail) a day or two before the meeting
    with the agenda attached.
  • Define roles/responsibilities of participants.
  • Prepare the room for optimal meeting environment.
  • Ample seating
  • Temperature
  • Lighting
  • Room arrangement

  • Choose Facilitator
  • Make sure Presenters are prepared and have access
    to necessary resources
  • Prepare all materials in advance.
  • Have all resources needed at meeting
  • Name tags
  • Sign in Sheets
  • Handouts
  • Whiteboard, flipcharts, easels
  • Pens, markers
  • Paper/note pads
  • If using PowerPoint, make sure there are ample
    outlets, extension cords, computer and projector
    are functional, screen or blank wall
  • Microphone if necessary

During the Meeting
  • Review the Agenda
  • Have participants approve/modify
  • Create ground rules
  • Watch the time!
  • Have a timekeeper
  • Assign note taker to record minutes
  • Facilitator should ensure that all have an
    opportunity to participate
  • Wrap it up summarize comments decisions
    define next steps, assign tasks, schedule next
    meeting

  • Review, edit, and distribute meeting notes
  • Review process with someone you trust
  • What worked and didnt work
  • Make adjustments as needed
  • Keep people informed between meetings about any
    changes, actions, or decisions

    any activity which makes easy the tasks of
    others.
  • Facilitation is used in business and
    organizational settings to ensure the designing
    and running of successful meetings

    settings, including business and other
    organizations to describe someone whose role it
    is to work with group processes to ensure
    meetings run well and achieve a high degree of
    consensus.

    confirmation from participant who made statement
    (give sample)
  • Maintain good eye contact with everyone
  • Use peoples names
  • Stay focused on the purpose outcome
