How did Gold Rush help the Preston Medical
Library to improve management of electronic
serials?
  • Preston Medical Library serves the Graduate
School of Medicine, University of Tennessee. The
library manages 7,255 full text electronic
journals, including subscribed journals, as well
as free and open source. The library has a small
staff, comprising four faculty librarians, two
staff, and a varying number of student workers.
The challenge before the library is to manage
serials effectively creating an optimal number
of access points to electronic journal content
while controlling monetary and staff time costs.
Would this solution provide us with quick,
effective access to important information, while
    also being cost-effective?

3
Focus for Evaluation
  • Cost Staff Time
  • Impact of the change on use
  • Evaluation and comparison of capabilities offered
    by the two systems

4
Cost Analysis
5
Staff Time Investment
  • How to measure?
  • Discrete measurement proved challenging.
  • We resolved this through subjective observations
    and discussion.

6
We agreed
  • Gold Rush saved staff time by making subscription
information easier to find and use.
  • Gold Rush loaded faster, resulting in fewer
    patron complaints.
  • Staff time in managing the Journal A-Z List and
Link Resolver were approximately equal for both
    systems

7
Impact of the Change on Use
15 Drop in Use for All
11 Drop in Core use
8
Statistical Analysis Was the decrease in Use
significant?
  • Comparisons of use from January to June 2007
    (TDNet) with ejournal
  • use from the same period in 2008 (Gold Rush),
    showed a drop in absolute
  • terms, off over 10,000 uses from the year
    previous.
  • The 2007 and 2008 use for 5,032 journals were
    compared using a Paired-Samples T-test. Results
show that journals were accessed more using TDNet
(M8.6, SD50.7) as compared to Gold Rush (M7.2,
    SD41.6). This difference was statistically
    significant, t(5031)3.451, p.001, d.05.
  • A second set of journals was developed,
eliminating all those that had zero use in both
years. These journals were also accessed more
using TDNet (M49.5, SD113.1) as compared to
Gold Rush (M41.2, SD92.7). This difference was
    statistically significant, t(871)3.471,
    p.001,d.12

9
Statistical Analysis of Core Medical Journals
  • Finally, a third set was analyzed. This final
set, encompassing the MedLine Core Clinical
Journals, was accessed more in 2007 (M152.8,
    SD210.3) as compared to 2008 (M138.1,
SD194.3). The difference here was not
    statistically significant, t(102)1.015, p.312.
