Book Talk Demonstration

• Before you do your book talks, I will demonstrate
  responding to some of the questions.
• Sample Journal
• Rubric
• 1 - CONFLICT What is the central conflict in
  your novel? (man v. man, man v. self....)
• Name at least (2) sub-plot conflicts.
• Who are the characters involved and how do the
  conflicts explain the problem that needs to be
  resolved in the novel?
• 2 - CHARACTERS
• Who is the main character?
• Who are the supporting characters?
• Name a method of characterization that the author
  uses and quote an example

• 3 - PLOT ELEMENTS
• When and where is the novel set?
• How does the setting impact the novel?
• If the setting was changed, would the novel have
  to be rewritten?
• 4 - PLOT ELEMENTS
• When is the central problem?
• How does the central problem relate to or impact
  the main character?

• 5 - AUTHORS USE OF LANGUAGE
• Use your journal and/or post-its from your novel
  to share 2 interesting examples of the authors
  use language.
• Explain why these examples are effective.
• 6 - MAIN IDEA (This is not a summary)
• What is the main idea of your novel?
• Provide at least 3 supporting details for this
  main idea.

• Silently reading the independent reading book you
  brought
• or silently looking for a new book
• and then silently reading it
• Notice the trend..
• Oh and BTW Still only 3 people on the couch?
