Title: Partnering for Success
1Partnering for Success
A case study demonstrating how Scopus improves
research productivity at Evotec
2Tomorrows Drugs Today
Evotec is building a pipeline of drug candidates
for more than 150 partners worldwide including
- From discovery to clinical phases to develop
novel small molecule drugs applicable to targets
across all therapeutic areas - 350 staff (primarily in Hamburg, Germany and
Abingdon, UK), 100 of which in RD
3Tomorrows Drugs Today
- Specializes in finding new treatments for
diseases of the Central Nervous System (CNS) - Has a product pipeline with candidates at various
stages of development - Has established itself as partner for pharma and
biotech companies by providing high-quality,
innovative and integrated solutions from drug
target to clinic - Offers higher value, results-driven projects by
sharing in the customers risks and success
4Partnering for Success
We strive to be the premier drug discovery and
development partner for pharmaceutical and
biotechnology companies
Scopus speeds up the initial phases of the
research process at Evotec by a factor of 2
5Evotecs main challenges
- As were actively involved as a development
partner in a program, we need to continuously
analyze literature to follow up on the progress. - We sometimes have to develop new experiments
within an existing program. - If weve sold a program to a partner company,
were often contacted by the company to comment
on questions that came up. - Were regarded as experts by our partners,
meaning that we have to be continuously up to
date so we can deliver high-quality and
innovative solutions whenever were called upon
to do so.

I use Scopus for
Building up expertise quickly and sustaining
this expertise Powerful alert function keeps us
up to date automatically
Routine, ongoing analysis of the
literature Indispensable for monitoring progress
or designing new experiments
Monitoring new publications across multiple
scientific fields Use tools like Citation Tracker
to keep track of breakthroughs and trends
Specific searches for well-known
compoundsdescribed in the literature Compare
with data on new chemical entities essential
information when soliciting potential partners
Initial broad search Scopus data helps me
interpret my initial observations as well as
draft new experiments

I use Scopus for
Constructing specific, targeted searches (Scopus
is my primary source of information)
Conducting broad searches across all subject
areas/topics to retrieve all information on this
specific target
Sophisticated tools like Citation Tracker to
extract additional data
Conducting initial broad search on current
patents
Searching for specific assays
20Why we prefer Scopus over other sources (1)
- Intuitive, easy-to-use platform, no prior
experience needed. Others, like Ovid, are much
more difficult to use. - Faster access to full text.
- Secure server (PubMed hasnt got this).
- Integrated patent search saves a lot of time
while doing my literature search. - Easy alerting to keep up to date automatically.
One of the main reasons we switched from Ovid to
Scopus was because Scopus is just so easy to
use.
Integrated patent searching saves me so much
time. I can get an overview of the patent
situation while Im doing my literature search.
I have a specific research interest. The Scopus
alerts deliver articles that are highly relevant
to my research area. You cant get this service
from Ovid.
Because of this, Scopus saves us precious time!
21Scopus Citation TrackerWhy we prefer Scopus
over other sources (2)
Within PubMed its not as easy to follow the
citation trail or link from citations. And I can
easily set up citation alerts. Ovid hasnt even
got a citation searching option.
One of the best features of Scopus is the
Citation Tracker. Following the citation trail
leads me to key information I might not have
found otherwise. This really adds value for me.
- Scopus Citation Tracker helps us to
- Identify relevant citation patterns on new
literature search - Check the most up-to-date citation data on
specific topics and articles - Track and evaluate research trends using the
extensive citation history - Save time compared with more traditional keyword
searching -
- Using PubMed or Ovid, Im essentially limited to
just traditional keyword searching.
221. Scopus search results keyword Alzheimer
232. Results list, sorted on highest number of
Cited Bys for each article
243. Selection of highest cited article to view
citation breakdown via the Citation Tracker
254. Citation overview with breakdown per year
From here you can click on a specific year, e.g.
2005
265. 2005 results
Result The Citation Tracker enables you to delve
deeper into content than by just using
traditional keyword searching leading to the
disclosure of multiple layers of information.
27The value Scopus has for us
- Scopus helps to gain and keep competitive
advantage in a fast-moving, highly demanding
market.
Scopus is very customer friendly and intuitive
and therefore easy to use. It gives a broad view
on literature searching and therefore makes the
whole picture complete.
Scopus is the most convenient database giving the
most comprehensive results in the shortest time.
Scopus speeds up the research process by a
factor of 2, compared to the situation before we
had Scopus available at our company.

28Evotec and Scopus Partnering for Success
- Scopus saves Evotec time, reduces costs and
contributes to greater research productivity in
the early research phase by a factor 2
accelerating the research process creates a
competitive advantage - Scopus provides the complete picture with cross-
disciplinary searching across every scientific
and biomedical discipline, disclosing information
that might not have been found in more
specialized databases - Using the Citation Tracker helps Evotec discover
key information that wouldnt have been found by
only using the search interface - Scopus facilitates quick access to full text
- Cross reference citation searching discloses
related and recent publications
