The Game
  • Pachisi is a complex cross and circle race
    board game.
  • It is played with 4 players on a cross shaped
    board.

3
  • It is a partner game that involves strategy and a
    lot of teamwork.
  • The word Pachisi is a Hindu word which means
    twenty-five.
  • Pachisi is also known as twenty-five because
twenty-five is the highest possible throw a
    player can get.

4
History
  • It is believed that Pachisi was created around
    the 4th century A.D.
  • It was created in India.
  • It has been described as Indias national board
    game.

5
Players
  • Pachisi is a game for four players (2 teams of
    2).
  • One team has yellow and black pieces and the
other team has red and green.

6
Equipment
  • The game is played on a cross shaped board, each
arm being divided into three columns of eight
squares. Boards can be made of any material, but
strong cloth is commonly used today with the
    gaming pattern embroidered into it.

7
Three of the squares on each arm are marked with
an X. The middle square at the end of each arm
and the 4th square in from the end on each side.
These squares are called castles. A piece may not
be captured on these spots. The middle of the
board is called the Charkoni. This is the
starting and ending position of the pieces.
8
Equipment
  • Each player has four pieces. Each players pieces
    are colored differently.

9
Rules
  • Six cowry shells are used to determine the amount
to move the players pieces. They are thrown from
the players hand and the number of shells which
fall with their openings upward indicate how many
    spaces the player moves.

10
Objective
  • Each players objective is to move all four of
their pieces around the board, counter-clockwise,
before their opponents do. The playing order is
decided by throwing the cowries and the player
with the highest score starts, and then the order
    continues in counter-clockwise motion. Each
players first piece may be moved from the
Charkoni on any throw. Each player moves their
pieces down the center column of their own arm of
the board, then counter clockwise around the
    outside columns.

11
Objective
  • A player may have any number of their pieces on
the board at a time. Only one piece may be moved
with a single throw, or the player can choose not
to move any. If a 6, 10 or 25 is thrown, the
player gets a grace. This enables them to bring
another one of their pieces from the Charkoni
onto the board, and they also get to repeat their
    turn.

12
Capturing
  • If a piece lands on a square (other than a castle
square) occupied by any number of the opponent's
pieces, those pieces are captured and must return
to the Charkoni. Captured pieces may only enter
the game again with a grace throw. A player
making a capture is allowed another turn.

13
Winning
  • The winners are the team who gets all of their
    pieces to the finish.
