Title: Cordia Middle School
1Cordia Middle School
2Recruitment and Publicity
- Our STLP Coordinator and some STLP students went
to all of the classrooms at the beginning of the
year and explained what STLP was and asked
students to join. - Students sat at a table in the hallway at pop
break and signed people up. - Students produced a brochure about their projects
and gave them out to the community members at our
schools Fall Festival. They also presented
their projects to the Volunteer Fire Department
in our community (at a public meeting) and
published articles in the local newspaper and the
school newspaper. - Students also presented their projects at a
meeting of the Knott County Board of Education.
3Cordia Middle School STLP
2005-2006
- Our school is a small school (120 students 7-12)
Also, our STLP program is an after-school
activity. Many students are in several
activities and have a difficult time juggling all
activities. We do have a diverse membership for
our small school.
4Students Help With Activities in the School
- STLP students presented PowerPoint presentations
about Veterans Day to students in the lower
grades.
5- Some students take pictures of school activities
for the yearbook and school newsletter. - Students hand out programs at the Fall Festival
and other school activities. - Students also set up the projectors for teachers.
6STLP Students Sponsor Share a Story Night for
Unite to Read
STLP students worked very hard to prepare for
Share a Story Night. They acted out a skit of
the book Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type.
They also had activity centers planned for the
childrentyping center, play-dough center,
puppet-making center, reading centers, face
painting, and art center. Everyone involved
loved it!

9STLP and PRIDE Working Together for a Better
Community
- The Middle School STLP became interested in the
PRIDE organization and what it stands for in the
5th/6th grade. They wanted to continue with
bettering their community and environment. They
wanted to initiate a recycling program. - They procured a 300 community grant by writing a
proposal from the Knott County Board of
Education. With this money they bought plastic
containers for every classroom for students to
deposit their aluminum cans and plastic bottles
in. They created a PowerPoint about the benefits
of recycling, not littering, and not polluting.
They presented this PowerPoint to Grades KG-6th
grades (Every 7th grader is in STLP). They also
sent letters home to the parents explaining their
project and telling them that they would have a
contestthe homeroom bringing in the most
recyclables all year would win an ice cream
party. - They asked for volunteers to take the recyclables
to the center once every two weeks.
10- Students found that they still had to separate
cans from bottles and take the lids off of the
bottles since the Recycling Center in Hazard does
not accept the lids. They had to put latex
gloves on and do some dirty work. However, the
program seems to be a success. - Students have also applied for a 500.00 grant
from Trus Joist. With this grant they want to
construct a building to store the recyclables in
until ready to transport to the Center. - Students also participated in a community
cleanup. This was also a success. They made
their own t-shirts with t-shirts and transfers
purchased at Wal-Mart with the community grant. - Students also created a bulletin board in the
school foyer about recycling.

13Portfolio Buddies
- STLP students worked with the 4th grade students
in cooperation with the 21st Century Learning
Program (after-school program) on their
portfolios. STLP students sent letters home
explaining to parents what they were doing. They
presented PowerPoint Presentations on Personal
narratives, showed students examples, and taught
students about MS Word. They then provided
guidance to students as they typed their
portfolios. - The English teacher/librarian taught the STLP
students how to conference with the 4th graders.
They then began conferencing with them on their
pieces.
14Projects are Ongoing
- These projects are ongoing. The recycling
project will go on all year long. We will work
with the PRIDE representative at our school in
doing mini-projects with the younger children.
We would like to produce a video for the PRIDE
representative to use with other schools. We
would like to get the community more involved
with our recycling program and get a recycling
center for our county (We are now taking it to a
recycling center in a neighboring county). - The Portfolio Buddies program will continue until
all portfolios are completed.
15Future Plans
We had a great year! Students learned a great
deal, and further developed their leadership
skills. They worked many hours after school, and
it paid off. They plan to attend the KTLC
Showcase and the May awards program. Students
who did not usually participate in school
activities really got into these projects and
developed confidence. Students are now planning
for next year. We plan to work with the fourth
graders as portfolio buddies again, to continue
our recycling program, and work with the 21st
Century Learning Program on another project (to
be decided upon). We may also do an electronic
presentation about the history of our school and
community.
