The challenge
  • This suggests that innovation in social care is
    not straightforward
  • Low tolerance of failure and of risk taking
  • Tendency to see imitation as innovation
  • Lack of a shared framework for evaluating
innovations and of knowledge management systems
    to capture and spread

be expected to promote, identify, and disseminate
best practice and innovation, acting as a
    catalyst for systemwide transformation.

commitment to the transformation of Adult Social
    Care, December 2007

Supporting innovation in service delivery
  • We are
  • Strengthening the evidence-base for change

Key findings
  • Existing research supports the greater use of
    assistive technology but further evaluation,
particularly about older peoples views on under
    use and about local implementation
  • Assistive technology devices address issues that
older people have identified as important to them
  • Early access to AT, before potential users have
adjusted to a changed life situation, may be
    beneficial

12
Practical material an ethical framework for
assistive technology
  • To provide an ethical context to develop the
policies and practice of person centred
technology for all groups of potential users
  • SCIE project to develop a code of practice for
the ethical use of Assistive Technology and
    Telecare in services
  • It will be guided by a panel of experts and
    organisations representing specific client
groups, and relevant service and industry
    perspectives
  • It will use a structured process for collecting
and distilling knowledge to elicit expert opinion
and translate it into an ethical code of practice

13
Demonstrating innovation using ICT to
communicate, challenge and learn
  • Multimedia - the right media for the right
    content and audience
  • Interactive - challenges peoples thinking and
practice, allows people to work in their own
    style, at their own pace
  • Bringing resources together one click access to
a range of related resources, saves users time
  • Dynamic content the latest data, the most
    recent research
