Locations of Rainforests

Characteristics info
  • Normal annual rainfall in these regions is
    between 69 and 79 inches.
  • 25 of modern medicines originate from the plants
  • Undergrowth is restricted by lack of sunlight to
the ground levels, making it possible for humans
and animals to walk through. This is different
compared to a jungle, where the ground is
occupied by vines, shrubs, and small trees.
  • The rainforest is composed of five main levels
The emergents, canopy, understory, shrub level,
    and forest floor.
  • Matter that falls to the forest floor quickly
    decomposes and becomes recycled nutrients.
  • Many soluble nutrients in rainforest are leeched
because of the high rainfall numbers, leading to
poor soil quality. The bacterial decay is so
great that humus does not easily accumulate.
  • Generally found near the equator

Impacts info
  •
  • In the next second the area of 2 football
fields will be destroyed in the rainforest.
  • Tropical rainforests combat greenhouse gases
and provide a home for native people and many of
    worlds plant and animal species.
  • Main destruction of rainforests is logging
  • Population growth -gt need more food -gt cut down
trees for fuel for cooking and room for farmland
  • Shifting/ slash and burn cultivation

Endangered Animal of the Rainforest Golden Lion
Tamarins
  • Golden Lion Tamarins
  • First endangered in 1982 and 1996 and then
again in 2000 it was declared to be critically
    endangered
  • Today they are classified as one of the most
    endangered animal in the world
  • There are only about 1,500 Golden Lion Tamarins
living in the wild. In addition to these, there
are about 450 Golden Lion Tamarins in zoos around
    the world.
  • By 2025 people hope to have 2000 wild Tamarins
  • Deforestation and commerce have caused their
populations to decline over the last 50 years.

Endangered Animal of the Rainforest Golden Lion
Tamarins Continued..
Deforestation This species needs about twice
the amount of forest that it has in order to
survive Currently only 2-3 of the Tamarins
original wild habitat still exists Due to the
logging that takes place in the rainforest it has
separated the forests from one another, which can
make the breeding season difficult so there is
also a fear that Tamarins could become extinct
from inbreeding. Commerce Because the
Tamarin has such beautiful fur it has been
fashion essential since the 17th century.
Finally in 1967 a law was passed that forbade
people from exporting Tamarins for their fur.
However, it is said that a Tamarin can go for
20,000 on the black market. Up until the 1960s
Tamarins were very popular as pets but laws have
been passed in forbid that.

It rains!
  • Rainforests cover only 6 of the worlds surface,
but are home to 50 of all animal and plant
    species.
