Title: School Improvement Plans and AYP

1
School Improvement Plans and AYP
  • Meeting the Nlt10 and Untested Populations
    Requirement

2
Accountability Workbook Section 1.2
  • Public schools and districts in Washington State
are annually judged on the basis of the same
criteria when the state makes an Adequate Yearly
    Progress (AYP) determination.

3
Unusual Circumstances
  • Schools that do not have an assessed grade
    (e.g.K-2)
  • Schools that normal AYP decisions would not be
    statistically reliable (Nlt10)
  • However
  • All schools must have an AYP status

4
To Obtain an AYP Status
  • These schools are held accountable through the
approval of their School Improvement Plan by the
local school board (WAC 180-16-220) and
  • Annual review of their plans by OSPI
  • Schools must also meet the goals set for the
other indicator in order to make AYP

5
Requirements for the School Improvement Plan WAC
180-16-220
  • School Board Approval
  • Under an approval process as determined by the
    district board of directors
  • Staff Certification
  • Every school employee required by WAC 180-79A-140
to possess a valid education permit,
certificate or credential issued by OSPI
  • Plan based on review and active participation and
    input by
  • Building staff, students, families, parents and
    community members

6

  • 4. Brief summary of the use of data
  • To establish improvement
  • 5. Continuous improvement
  • How student achievement of state learning goals
and essential academic learning requirements is
    promoted
  • 6. Recognition of non-academic student learning
  • E.g. public speaking, leadership, interpersonal
    relationship skills, teamwork, self-confidence
    and resiliency

180-16-220
  • 7. Characteristics of successful schools
  • 7 Characteristics of Successful Schools
  • 8. Educational equity factors
  • Gender, race, ethnicity, culture, language,
    physical/mental ability
  • 9. Use of technology to facilitate instruction
  • 10. Parent, family, and community involvement

8
Trends
  • The following items are often missing in the
    plans
  • Board approval
  • Required participants
  • Non-academic student learning

9
Consequences
  • Buildings or districts with Nlt10 schools or
schools that do not have WASL-tested grades who
do not submit the required School Improvement
    Plan will not make AYP.
  • Failure to make AYP for two consecutive years
will result in the identification for school
    improvement beginning with Step 1.

10
The Process
  • If you are newly indentified you must submit your
    entire SIP
  • If you submitted a plan in 06-07, submit only the
changes indicated on the accountability feedback
form along with an assurance of your annual
    review
  • If you submitted a SIP in 06-07 and NO changes
were required, please review the plan, sign and
    date an assurance form
