Title: Publishing services technology integration plan, 20092011
1Publishing services technology integration plan,
20092011
Newgen
2Newgens technology team currently operates
within six streams of software/services
development.
3nCompass
ITC
RT
Author Services
CE Genius
Ancillary Content Services
4nCompass is Newgens Web-based workflow and
content management system. The system controls
process adherence, scheduling and task
allocation, file versioning, and backup.
5RT is Newgens mail management system. All
incoming mails are tagged so that a complete
project history is always available. Project
managers use RT to coordinate mail responses and
push mails to individual operators to follow up.
6CE Genius is Newgens in-house editing tool for
books and journals. It manages the structuring
and normalization of files for XML output,
publisher style sheet imposition, consistency
checking, citation matching and reference
checking, and standard language checks.
7ITC is Newgens prepress data conversion tool. It
is used to manage a single tagged data stream for
composition and nonprint deliverables.
Composition software is integrated into ITC to
automate page makeup.
8Author Services comprise tools, templates, and
documentation made available directly to authors
through the production cycle. This stream of
technology development also looks at the
interfaces between Newgen and authors, such as
online proofing.
9Ancillary Content Services is an umbrella term
for the development of alternative publication
formats and ancillary content related to print
products. This area of development combines
technology with design and content creation.
10The technology teams priority for the next three
years is the extension and integration of these
six tools into a single, open prepress system.
11The key objectives for tool development in
200911 are
- continuous improvements in quality and
productivity through automation and validation - increased ease of use for clients and other
stakeholders - increased flexibility through open source
standards - alignment to expressed and perceived client needs
12nCompass will form the core of an integrated
system. Developments will be focused on
increasing flexibility, reducing administrative
burden, improving reporting capabilities, and
exchanging data with clients systems.
13RT is a relatively mature system. Further work
will be focused on developing its utility as a
project management tool, including direct
assignment of tasks through nCompass.
14CE Genius will become a Web-based system.
Developments will be focused on increasing the
automation of manual tasks, expanding the
databases of style and subject-specific rules,
and integrating natural language processing tools.
15ITC will be further standardized to implement an
XML-first workflow across the business.
Validation routines will be strengthened to
improve quality. ITCs output filters will be
augmented to produce a wider range of nonprint
products automatically.
16Author Services will be a Web portal for academic
authors. It will make available tools,
collaborative authoring systems, and a knowledge
base to guide authors through the production
process. It will also be the interface for online
proofing.
17Ancillary Content Services will manage the
delivery of multiple ebook formats, build
companion Web sites, master DVDs, prepare
PowerPoint presentations and Flash
resourceswhatever is required for publishers to
maximize the (re)use of content.
