Douglass ISD Leadership Program
  • The goal of the Douglass ISD Leadership Program
    is to develop successful leaders for the future.
    The components of the program are
  • - Guest Speakers
  • - Leadership Portfolios
  • - College Program
  • - Extended College Program

Guest Speakers
  • School counselor will present to each K-6th
    classroom annually on topics concerning character
    education.
  • Beginning in 7th grade, guest speakers will be
    utilized to convey information to students.
    These speakers may be staff members, business
    leaders or others that may bring valuable
    knowledge to the students.

Leadership Portfolio
  • Counselor and student will begin a Leadership
    Portfolio during the first six weeks of the
    students 9th grade year.
  • The counselor and student will meet a minimum of
    once a semester to review and update the
    Leadership Portfolio as needed.

  • Will include
  • 1) Inventory interest
  • a. Career
  • b. Higher Education
  • c. Vocational
  • d. Military
  • 2) ASVAB, THEA, SAT/ACT scores
  • 3) Scholarship Applications
  • 4) Service record for volunteer hours
  • 5) Other pertinent information

College Program
  • All students on the Recommended or Distinguished
    Graduation Plan will be reimbursed by Douglass
    ISD for one administration of the ACT or SAT.

College Program
  • Angelina College offers 6 hours of college credit
    on the DISD campus each semester.
  • A student that takes advantage of this program
    may earn up to 24 college hours without ever
    leaving campus.

College Program
  • A student must meet and adhere to the following
    guidelines to participate
  • 1) Must be a student currently enrolled in
    Douglass ISD.
  • 2) Students must be on Recommended or
    Distinguished Graduation Plan in order to
    participate in the college program.
  • 3) If a student takes High School English IV
    and the College English course, the High School
    English IV grade will be used.
  • 4) Students must take both college classes that
    are offered.
  • 5) If a student is removed by the instructor
    from one class, they will also be dropped from
    the other class as well.
  • 6) If a student is removed by the instructor,
    for any reason, including excessive absences, the
    student will not be allowed to participate in the
    Douglass ISD College Program in the future.
  • 7) In the event a student earns a grade of D
    or F in a class, the student will not be able
    to participate in the program for one semester.
    A student making a grade of D or F in more
    than one semester will not participate in the
    College Program in the future.

Extended College Program
  • A student that successfully completed 12 hours of
    coursework through the Douglass ISD College
    Program during their 11th grade year, and made no
    grade lower than a C, will be eligible to earn
    6 hours credit during the summer semesters
    between their 11th and 12th grade year. Students
    may also earn credit through on-line classes
    during their 11th and 12th grade years.

Extended College Program
  • For a student to earn credit in the Extended
    College Program, the following requirements must
    be met
  • 1) Must be an accredited college or university
  • 2) Must be pre-approved by the counselor and
    principal.
  • 3) Must be a core subject, transferable to
    other state colleges.
  • 4) All guidelines of College Program and
    Reimbursement Program will apply.

Extended College Program
  • The Extended College Program will allow a student
    to earn up to 30 hours of college credit. Thirty
    hours will qualify them as a college sophomore
    when they graduate and be very beneficial in
    their college success.

College Reimbursement Program
  • A student that has successfully passed all DHS
    classes for the semester and has earned a grade
    of A or B in both college classes will be
    reimbursed by Douglass ISD for tuition and fees
    as set by Angelina College.
  • A student that earns a grade of C in the
    college class may also be reimbursed if they earn
    an 85 in all DHS non-honors classes and an 80 in
    all honors classes for the semester.
  • Reimbursement awards will be based on the
    students lowest college grade for the semester.

  • Textbooks, late fees or other additional charges
    will not be reimbursed.
  • Students may be reimbursed up to 30 hours of
    college credit.

College Reimbursement Program
  • A student that successfully completes all 5
    semesters and receives the DISD Scholarship will
    have been awarded 2,250.

College ReimbursementProgram
  • An average year of college will cost a student
    approximately 10,000, at a state university.
  • A student that completes this program, will save
    25 or 10,000 of their total education
    investment.

Vocational Program
  • The vocational program is designed to give our
    students the best opportunity to be successful in
    obtaining a vocational degree or certification.

Vocational Program
  • Vocational classes are offered at Angelina
    College in Lufkin.
  • Classes may be taken in the summer between a
    students 10th and 11th grade years as well as
    between their 11th and 12th grade years.
    Students may also take evening classes.

Vocational Program
  • A student must meet and adhere to the following
    guidelines to participate
  • 1) Must be a student currently enrolled in
    Douglass ISD.
  • 2) Students must have an overall 80 average in
    each class during the 10th grade year to
    participate in the program during the summer
    entering their 11th grade year. Students then
    must maintain an 75 average each semester to
    participate in the Vocational Program the
    following semester.
  • 3) Students will be responsible for their
    individual transportation to and from the
    Angelina College campus.
  • 4) If a student is removed by the instructor,
    for any reason, including excessive absences, the
    student will not be allowed to participate in the
    Douglass ISD Vocational Program in the future.
  • 5) In the event a student earns a grade of D
    or F in a class, the student will not be able
    to participate in the program for one semester.
    A student making a grade of D or F in more
    than one semester will not participate in the
    Douglass ISD Vocational Program in the future.

Vocational ReimbursementProgram
  • A student that has successfully passed all DHS
    classes for the semester and has earned a grade
    of A or B in both vocational classes will be
    reimbursed by Douglass ISD for tuition and fees
    as set by Angelina College.
  • A student that earns a grade of C in one of the
    vocational classes may also be reimbursed if they
    earn a 75 in all DHS non-honors classes and a 70
    in all honors classes for the semester.

  • Douglass ISD will reimburse up to 200 per
    semester, for travel expenses.
  • Textbooks, late fees or other additional charges
    will not be reimbursed.
  • Students may be reimbursed up to 30 hours of
    college credit.

Service Program
  • An important attribute in a successful leader is
    service to others.
  • Any student that has at least a 70 average in
    each class will be eligible to participate.

Service Program
  • In order to receive credit for the Service
    Program, a student must log a minimum of 50 hours
    of pre-approved service.
  • Hours must be registered during the students
    11th and 12th grade years.
  • Service hours will require proper documentation
    and signatures.

Douglass ISD Scholarship
  • A student that successfully participates in the
    Douglass ISD Leadership Program will receive a
    250 scholarship from the Douglass Scholarship
    Fund once they have completed the following
    requirements
  • 1) Successfully graduate from Douglass High
    School.
  • 2) Successfully complete 24 college hours or 12
    hours of vocational training.
  • 3) Successfully complete 50 hours of volunteer
    service.
  • 4) Verification of acceptance to a college,
    university, or vocational school.
  • 5) Have documentation of a minimum of 5
    scholarship applications.

Graduation Honors
  • During the commencement ceremonies, students
    that have completed all or portions of the
    Leadership Program will be given the following
    recognitions
  • National Honor Society Member Gold Stole
  • Valedictorian Gold Cord
  • Salutatorian White Cord
  • Historian White Cord
  • 30 Hours College Program Red Cord
  • 15 Hours Vocational Program Red Cord
  • 50 Hours Service Program Green Cord

Funding
  • Douglass ISD will utilize state money in the
    category of High School Allotment Funds. These
    funds are earmarked by the state to enhance
    success after graduation.
