2
Step 1 Start With A Task
  • The teacher sets up a task that is greater than
the task at hand. It is open-ended. It will pose
a situation that the students can tackle knowing
that there is no one answer or solution.
  • Select a task that support the curriculum, thus
    fueling the process.
  • Students are encouraged to come up with
    hypotheses.

3
Step2 Design a Plan for the Project
  • The teacher should have in mind which content
    standards will be addressed.
  • The teacher should know what materials and
resources will be accessible to the students to
    assist them.
  • Involve the students in the planning process so
that students feel ownership of the project .

4
Step 3 Create a Schedule
  • Design a timeline for project components. Be
flexible, but help the students realize that a
time will come when they need to finalize their
    thoughts, findings, and evaluations.
  • Help students who may not perceive time limits.
Set benchmarks. Give students direction for
    managing their time.

5
Step 4 Monitor the Students and the
Progress of the Project
  • Teach the students how to work collaboratively.
  • Have students choose their primary roles but
assume responsibility and interactivity for all
    group roles.
  • Assess the process. Create rubrics -- team
    rubrics and project rubrics.

6
Step 5Assess the Outcome
  • Assessment provides diagnostic feedback. It helps
    teachers set standards.
  • Whenever possible, give the students the
    opportunity to do self-assessment.
  • When a student's assessment and the teacher's
    assessment don't agree, it's a perfect time for a
    student-teacher conference.

7
Step 6Evaluate the Experience
  • Students take time to reflect, individually and
    as a group.
  • Share feelings and experiences.
  • Discuss what worked well.
  • Discuss what needs change.
  • Share ideas that will lead to new questions, thus
    new projects
