The Role of Art for the Aborigines
  • Aboriginal Australians traditionally used art as
a means of communication or expression in
    different forms.
  • Their artworks were expressions of their beliefs,
    the Dreamtime and Dreaming stories.
  • Whatever they drew, engraved or painted onto
sand, earth, rock, trees or wood had significant
    meanings to them.

3
Traditional art in Australia
  • Aboriginal peoples have been producing visual art
for many thousands of years. It takes many forms
  • ancient engravings and rock art,
  • designs in sand or on the body,
  • fibre craft and wooden sculptures,
  • bark paintings

4
Body Painting or Scarification
  • Body painting traditionally carries deep
    spiritual significance for Australian Aboriginal
    people. It includes
  • scarring,
  • face and body painting for ritual,
  • wearing of ornaments.

5
Bark Painting
  • This is a way of painting on the bark of trees.
Bark paintings are illustrated stories for
    children.

6
Rock art
  • This is the oldest art form in the world, maybe
    40 000 years old.

7
Contemporary Aboriginal Art
  • Since the early 1970s, Aboriginal contemporary
    art has grown rapidly.
  • Communities today still produce traditional art,
which has traditional content and meaning.
However, some methods of producing the art may be
    contemporary.
