Title: AN ACTIVELEARNING APPROACH TO MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

1
AN ACTIVE-LEARNING APPROACH TO MATERIALS
DEVELOPMENT
  • Malcolm Ryan and Simon Walker
  • Greenwich Initiative in Learning Teaching (GILT)

2
Rationale of Approach
  • It assumes that the learning to be undertaken is
  • prescribed by stated outcomes
  • time-limited (i.e. to be achieved within a stated
period such as a semester or term)
  • assessed

3
An Active Approach
  • One in which the student is actively involved in
processes that lead to the production of evidence
    that will satisfy the outcomes.

4
A Generic Approach
  • It should apply irrespective of
  • Subject
  • Level
  • Location of the learning (i.e. physical or
    virtual)

5
The Process
  • A process in which the author/developer
  • Analyses outcomes
  • Specifies evidence
  • Devises activities
  • Identifies materials

6
Analyse Outcomes
  • What constitutes knowledge? Does it underpin the
    skills and attitudes?
  • What skills are fundamental and which are
    optional?
  • What attitudes are we trying to encourage to
    studying, being a professional, life-long
    learning, etc?

7
Specify Evidence
  • What must students do to demonstrate that they
    have achieved the learning outcomes?
  • What forms should this evidence take?
  • How are you incorporating evidence of key skills?
  • To what extent are you preparing students for the
    world of work?

8
Devise Activities
  • What should be the balance between
    individual/group work?
  • What are the implications of the chosen approach?
  • How will feedback be given?
  • Will the feedback be recorded and submitted as
    evidence?

9
Identify Materials
  • Is the material up to date and relevant?
  • How will you ensure that all learning styles are
    addressed?
  • What materials already exist that you can use
    with or without adaptation?
  • What new materials must you develop?
  • What is the best medium to use?
  • Are they accessible?
