"Civil engineering is the profession in which a
knowledge of the mathematical and physical
sciences gained by study, experience, and
practice is applied with judgment to develop ways
to utilize, economically, the materials and
forces of nature for the progressive well-being
of humanity in creating, improving, and
protecting the environment, in providing
facilities for community living, industry and
transportation, and in providing structures for
the use of humanity."
Monuments of the Millennium Seven Wonders of the
Modern World
Falkirk Wheel, Hoover Dam, London Millennium
Bridge, Survey Crew (1918) Wikipedia
3Hoover Dam A Monument of the Millennium
- Completed in 1935
- 725 ft high, highest dam in the world at the time
of construction (by 300) - Still the highest concrete dam in the Western
Hemisphere - Regulates Colorado River
- Serves 1.3 million people and 1.5 million acres
of land
4California Water Project A Monument of the
Millennium
- Designed 50 years ago
- System of aqueducts, dams, reservoirs and plants
- Serves 2/3 of California (23 million)
- 32 storage facilities, reservoirs and lakes, 17
pumping plants, five hydroelectric plants, 660
miles of open canals and pipelines
Date of DedicationMay 22, 2001
5Chicago Wastewater System A Monument of the
Millennium
- Reversal of the Chicago River, completed in 1900
- Prior to this, untreated sewage flowed directly
into river, then the lake - 28 mile long channel connecting Chicago River
with the Des Plaines River reversed the flow away
from Lake Michigan - 28 million yd3 of glacial til and 12.9 million
yd3 of rock removed, using conveyers, steam
shovels, horse drawn wagons, dynamite
6Golden Gate Bridge A Monument of the Millennium
- One of the most recognized landmarks in the world
- 1937
- Main suspension span length of 4,200
- Mile wide turbulent Golden Gate Strait
- 4 years to build,
- 83,000 tons of steel, 389,000 yd3 concrete,
enough cable to encircle the earth three times.
7The Empire State Building A Monument of the
Millennium
- 1,250 ft
- One of the best-known skyscrapers in the world
- Construction completed in 1 year, 45 days,
without labor overtime - 58,000 ton frame riveted together by ironworkers
- Masons finished exterior in 8 months
- 51 miles of pipe
- 17 million ft of telephone wire
- The precise choreography of the operation
revolutionized the tall building construction
industry - Engineered so well that it easily repaired after
a bomber crashed into it in 1945
8The Panama Canal Seven Wonders of the Modern
World
- Considered on of civil engineerings greatest
triumphs - Combined the skills of structural, geotechnical,
hydraulic and environmental engineers - Enough earth a rubble removed to open a 16 wide
tunnel to the center of the earth - Finished on time and on budget
- In operation since 1914

9Seven Wonders of the Modern World
CN Tower The world's tallest free-standing
structure soars 1,815-feet above the sidewalks of
Toronto, three times the height of its
better-known cousin, the Seattle Space Needle.
Netherlands North Sea Protection Works This
singularly unique, vast and complex system of
dams, floodgates, storm surge barriers and other
engineered works literally allows the Netherlands
to exist.
