Title: Deliverable D13 The ICONS graphic interface design specification

1
Deliverable D13The ICONS graphic interface
design specification
  • Jacek Plodzien
  • Ewa Stemposz
  • Institute of Computer Science PAS

2
D13- Content of the Report
  • Technical specification for the ICONS graphical
interfaces, meeting the requirements stated in
    the preceding reports.
  • The following modules are specified
  • Electronic Form Manager
  • Content Presentation Manager
  • Knowledge Map Graph Manager
  • Structural Knowledge Graph Manager
  • Process Graph Manager
  • The design specification is presented on the
level of implementation details and scenarios of
    user interaction.

3
Electronic Form Manager
  • Electronic forms implemented in Electronic Form
Manager are ubiquitous in content management
systems, in particular in the Web content
management area, as means to create, update and
    search content objects.
  • An outstanding problem, in particular pertaining
to the Web-oriented solutions, is the size and
    complexity of the processed data.
  • Semi-structureness of the processed XML data
makes the presentation even more difficult.
  • Aspects of ergonomy and user friendliness are of
    the primary importance.

Content Presentation Manager
  • Content presentation pertains to displaying,
usually in the Internet browser, of multimedia
content objects comprised in the content
    repository.
  • Content is held within the repository in a
variety of native formats (e.g. CAD, MS Word,
    Acrobat).
  • We preserve the possibility to present and/or
edit the content in the very tool that it was
    originally created.
  • A uniform web based browser interface requires
rendering that facilitates for presenting all of
them in a consistent HTML compliant way.

6
Knowledge Map Graph Manger
  • A graphical interface to services offered by the
Categorisation Engine - Knowledge Map on the user
    interface level.
  • Application specific knowledge maps are to be
defined and materialised. Provide means to
categorise information objects stored in the
    content repository.
  • Knowledge Map Graph Manger enhances ICONS
potentials with respect to navigation and search.
  • Users can drill down into consecutive levels of
categorisation hierarchy to find more and more
pertinent information among fewer and fewer
    occurrences.

Structural Knowledge Graph Navigator
  • Accomplishes visual querying of the ICONS content
base assuming the metaphor based on navigation in
a graph representing stored data structures.
  • Two particular forms of the graph imply the
    following retrieval or browsing scenarios
  • Extensional navigation. In this retrieval
paradigm the user directly navigates through the
graph of objects moving his/her focus according
    to links connecting objects.
  • Intentional navigation. The user navigates
through a graph representing the database schema.
  • Baskets storing temporary and final query results.

Process Graph Manager
  • Workflow management system to provide a
simple-to-use but powerful and easy communication
    between vendors and users.
  • Modeling business processes of organizations.
  • Implemented a standard notation to model business
    processes, namely Business Process Modeling
Notation. It specifies how to model business
    processes.
  • It proposes three types of process models
    private (internal), interface (public/abstract)
    and collaboration process models.

Conclusion
  • Prototypes of ICONS graphical user interfaces are
    ready to use.
  • The specification has been developed together
    with implementation.
  • Although modules were designed before
    programming, the technical specification reflects
the current version of graphical interfaces of
the ICONS platform partially validated in the
    process of example application development.
  • A number of errors and deficiencies as well as
improvement proposals were identified and put
    into development.
