Cuban Independence

• Teller Amendment 1898 The U.S. did not intend to
  control Cuba.
• For the next 4 years, the U.S. military governed
  Cuba.
• Cubans that protested this were imprisoned or
  exiled.

Platt Amendment

• U.S. govt forced Cuba to include the Platt
  Amendment in its constitution.
• Platt Amendment 1901
• Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its
  independence.
• U.S. reserved the right to intervene in Cuba to
  maintain order.
• Cuba could not go into debt.
• U.S. could buy or lease land on the island for
  naval or coaling stations.

Philippines

• Filipinos wanted independence from Spainnot to
  have the U.S. in charge.
• U.S. and Philippines fought for 3 years.
• 270,000 Filipinos died - 4,300 Americans died.
• Cost 600 million.
• U.S. set up a govt in Philippines similar to
  Puerto Ricos.
• Philippines finally gained independence in 1946.

Puerto Rico

• At first, Puerto Ricans were happy to be free
  from Spanish rule.
• Then, they realized that the U.S. govt held
  attitudes of superiority to non-whites.
• Puerto Ricans were not allowed citizenship until
  1917.
• Public opinion in Puerto Rico remains split
• Independence from U.S.
• Gain statehood from U.S.
• Remain with status quo.
