Title: Universal Design for Learning

1
Universal Design for Learning
  • A one-size-fits-all approach to education simply
    does not work.

2
Adaptation
  • Because most curricula are unable to adapt to
individual differences, we have come to recognize
that our curricula, rather than our students, are
    disabled.
  • We must step back and consider representation,
    expression and engagement

3
First lets clear some things up!
  • UDL is not just all about technology
  • UDL is not a curriculum/lesson plan
  • UDL can be implemented in stages
  • UDL is not differentiated instruction
Differentiated instruction is a part of universal
design for learning.  DI does take into account
the individual child and how to represent the
information, but the pure definition of DI leaves
out the principles of engagement and expression
as they pertain to that individual child or the
class as a group.  UDL is a FRAMEWORK that
    supports differentiated instruction and many
other INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES - which is what
    differentiated instruction is.

4
UDL mirrors the universal design movement in
architecture and product development.
  • Think of speakerphones, curb cuts, and
    close-captioned television, adapted medicine
    bottle capsall universally designed to
accommodate a wide variety of users, including
    those with disabilities.
  • Embedded features that help those with
    disabilities eventually benefit everyone.

5
Curriculum supporting how the brain works
  • Multiple means of representation to give learners
various ways of acquiring information and
    knowledge
  • Multiple means of action and expression to
    provide learners alternatives for demonstrating
    what they know, and
  • Multiple means of engagement to tap into
    learners' interests

6
UDL provides a blueprint that accommodate learner
differences by
  • creating flexible goals
  • varying methods
  • utilizing materials
  • multiple means of assessments

Time to put UDL in to action!
  • Computers
  • Lesson
  • (Slides 1-14 have been renovated to the UDL
Principles. Slides 15 will have some of the
UDL Principles visible, however there will be
many situations that have not been looked at
through the lens of UDL. This should be a good
    comparison for discussion.
