  • Posed as someone else and tricked 30 classmates
    to send nude photos
  • Then blackmailed them into giving his sexual
    favors

TALK TO KIDS with Context
  • Public Enemy Number 1 is complacency!
  • Use Technology to combat Technology
  • Increase awareness (kids and parents)
  • Locate good sources of information
  • Educate Children on Safe behavior and ethics

Common Sense Safety
  • Talk to your teens
  • Set rules and time limits
  • Be open and encourage them to come to you with
    suspicious behaviors
  • Remind them often of the rules, dangers, and
    safeguards
  • Educate yourself on the technology, dangers, and
    safeguards
  • Dont forbid them, they will just access this
    from a friends house

  • Explain these to your teens
  • Be careful what you share as others may not have

  • No routine schedules
  • Careful consideration of your friends
  • Check what friends post about you
  • Check for aggregate information

    publically!
  • Remember that the information never dies!

Beware of Strangers
  • Often are not who they claim to be
  • Limit who can talk to you
  • Never agree to meet a stranger or give out
    personal information such as address to a stranger

  • Dont believe everything you read
  • Dont rely on stated identities
  • Verify all information

Evaluate Privacy and Security Setting
  • Check your profile privacy settings on all sites
  • Dont give personal information freely on the web
  • Check what your friends display about you
  • Dont post anything you wouldnt want to be
    PUBLIC!

Use Strong Passwords
  • No dictionary words, names, pets, birthdates etc.
  • Use acronyms
  • Change passwords often
  • Include upper and lower case letters, numbers,
    and special characters
  • At least 8 characters
  • 1cmPW2d!

Maintain Anti-virus software
  • Renew every year
  • Update daily
  • Scan weekly
  • Make sure to include internet content and e-mail
  • May also be bundled with content filter, spyware
    detection etc.

Practice Safe Surfing
  • Dont open unknown e-mail
  • Keep your patches up to date
  • Dont install rogue software
  • Never click on links in e-mail
  • Dont download unsolicited applications
  • Use Windows firewall and security settings
  • Never run as administrator
