Nimitz Marine Facility, SIO
  • ADM Nimitz was a Regent of UC 1948-56, and
organized NROTC at Berkeley in 1920s.
  • 4 of 25 UNOLS ships, plus FLIP. Most of any
    UNOLS institution
  • Global to local voyages, all areas of ocean
    science
  • National operations coordinated for overall
    schedule efficiency via UNOLS
  • Melville and Revelle are owned by US Navy.
Sproul and New Horizon are UC-owned.

Operation SWAB
Program started in 1981 Is not a health and
safety survey All UNOLS ships adhere to this
standard Designed to detect low levels of 14C and
3H contamination

  • California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries
    Investigations (CalCOFI)
  • Partnership between California Department of Fish
    and Game,
  • NOAA Fisheries Service and SIO
  • Began in 1949 and ongoing ever since.
  • Every quarter a team from SIO leaves for a 2-3
    week cruise.
  • Focus Is to study the marine environment off the
    coast of
  • California and the management of its living
    resources.

24
Each cruise occupies a grid of 66 stations
On each station a whole suite of chemical and
physical measurements are made.
Temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, primary
production, phyto and zooplankton biomass, phyto
and zooplankton biodiversity, distribution of
birds and mammals.
25
(CTD) Conductivity, Temperature, and Density
Rosette
Salinity, chlorophyll, oxygen, nutrients,
primary Productivity, and temperature
