Title: Monarch Migration

1
Monarch Migration
  • By Cory Brannaman

2
Preparing for Migration
  • Monarchs prepare for the Migration by eating a
large amount of food(nectar) which turns into fat
that fuels their flight of 3,000 miles.
Researchers think that they conserve energy by
gliding on air currents going south.

3
Where Monarchs Migrate
Monarchs migrate to Mexico, often to the
same trees each year. Although, the Monarchs on
the West coast migrate to Baja, California. The
Monarchs in the Midwest dont migrate to
California because the Rocky Mountains would get
in the way.

4
On their way of Migration
  • Monarch butterflies migrate together a lot but
also split up. They are cold-blooded so they are
not able to fly in very cold weather. Temperature
changes make the Monarchs make different
    decisions.

5
Leaving Mexico
  • Monarchs, after a winter in Mexico, head back
north in the second week of March. At this time
they often mate.If they return too early, the
female Monarchs wont be able to lay their eggs
    on the milkweed they need.
