learn to count!

In this book, we will learn how to count while we
play darts.
Darts is a sport that is all about numbers. You
win if you get exactly the right number of points
before your opponent does.
The more you know about numbers, the better you
will be at playing darts!
So lets begin

Here is something that looks like a dartboard,
but is slightly different.

smallest number is at the top. The largest is at

each number in turn, say its name, and write it
in the row of boxes below. Draw a dart in a
bullseye each time you do this correctly. Draw a
dart outside the bullseye each time you make a
mistake. When you have three bullseyes in a row,
move on!

Pick up your darts! Lets play Around the Clock!
s game
Starting with one and ending with twenty, try to
hit each numbers segment in turn.
If you dont hit the number first time, try again
until you do!
Say the numbers you hit out loud, then write them
on the chalkboard shown.
22
Now lets play Back Around the Clock!
s game
This time, try it backwards!
Start with twenty and end with one. If you dont
hit a number first time, try again until you do.
As you play, say each number you hit out loud, as
well as the number before it and the number after
it, and write them all on the chalkboard shown.
23
Find an opponent!
vs.
Lets play Around the Clock Singles!
Again, you must hit each of the numbers in turn,
starting with one and ending with twenty. But
this time you have to do it before your opponent
does! Decide who will throw first, then take it
in turns to throw a dart. As before, if you
dont hit the right number, try again on your
next turn. You win if you get to twenty first!
24
vs.
vs.
25
Now you can count up to twenty. But the numbers
dont stop there. In fact, they go on forever!
Before we see how to write and say the rest,
lets see what we can do with numbersother than
win at darts, of course!
Meet Mohammed and Chloe. They both collect darts
with coloured flights. Here are their
collections.
Chloes darts
Mohammeds darts
26
One day, Mohammed says to Chloe
I have more darts than you!
Their friend Eloise disagrees. She says to
Mohammed
You dont have more darts than Chloe. She has
more than you.
27
Chloe isnt convinced that either Eloise or
Mohammed is right. She thinks
Mohammed doesnt have more darts than I have
and I dont have more darts than he has. We have
the same number of darts.
Who is right? Is it Chloe, Eloise, or Mohammed?
28
To find out who is right, first we count Chloes
darts and then we count Mohammeds darts. But
what does this mean? To count Chloes darts,
we point to each one in turn and say the numbers
that we learned earlier in the order we learned
to put them, starting with 1. Ill go show you
how on the next page
29
Chloes darts
1
First, point to the dark red dart and say Next,
point to the light red dart and say Then, point
to the blue dart and say Then, point to the
green dart and say Finally, point to the orange
dart and say
2
3
4
5
30
Now try it again, but this time you write the
numbers under each dart as you say them out loud.
Draw a dart in the bullseye to show that you have
done this correctly.
31
When we counted Chloes darts, we got to 5, so
Chloe has 5 darts! Thats how counting works!
Now we count Mohammeds darts. Just as we did
when we counted Chloes darts, write the numbers
in order in the blue boxes under the darts,
starting with 1. Draw a dart in the bullseye
when you do it correctly.
Mohammeds darts
32
When we counted Chloes darts, we got to 5.
When we counted Mohammeds darts, we got to
5. So they both have 5 darts. Chloe was right!
They do have the same number of darts! If we
had stopped before 5 when we counted Mohammeds
darts, he would have had fewer than Chloe. In
this case, Eloise would have been right! If we
had stopped after 5 when we counted Mohammeds
darts, he would have had more than Chloe. In
this case, Mohammed would have been right! On
the next few pages, we meet lots of other people
with darts collections. Count each collection
and write how many darts there are in it in the
blue box beside it.
33
Yasmins darts
Connors darts
Kellys darts
Roberts darts
34
Erins darts
Jacks darts
Rajs darts
Nelsons darts
35
Samuels darts
Abduls darts
36
Yasmin says that she has fewer darts than
Lewis. Is she right? Draw a dart in the
bullseye if shes right. Draw a dart outside
the bullseye if shes wrong. Kelly says she has
the same number of darts as Lewis. Is she
right? Connor says he has more darts than
Lewis. Is he right? Lewis says he has the same
number of darts as Connor. Is he right?
37
How many darts are in Yasmin and Lewis
collections of darts put together? How many
darts are in Erin and Rajs collections of darts
put together? How many darts are in Connor and
Kellys collections of darts put together? How
many darts are in Samuel and Abduls collections
of darts put together?
38
Now that we know all about counting, lets get
back to the dartboard. Lets play A Game of
Two Halves! Player 1 takes ten darts and tries
to hit the left-hand half of the board. When all
the darts have been thrown, count how many are on
the left-hand half and how many are on the
right-hand side. Player 1 Left-hand
half Right-hand half Player 2 takes ten darts
and tries to hit the right-hand half of the
board. When all the darts have been thrown,
count how many are on the right-hand half and how
many are on the left-hand half. Player 2
Left-hand half Right-hand half
39
A Game of Two Halves scoresheet
Game 1 Player 1 Left-hand half Right-hand

Game 2 Player 1 Left-hand half Right-hand
half Player 2 Left-hand half Right-hand half
Game 3 Player 1 Left-hand half Right-hand
half Player 2 Left-hand half Right-hand half
40
I said earlier that the numbers dont stop at 20.
They go on forever. So what comes after 20?
Lets find out. First, write down the numbers
from 6 to 12.
Now, write down the numbers from 16 to 20.
?
?
Compare the two rows of numbers youve written
down. Try to see what they have in common.
Once youve seen it, guess how we might continue
after 20.
41
Just as we continue after 10 like this

Now, again by comparing what Ive written above,
how do you think we might continue after 29?
29
42
Using the same idea, write down how we might
continue after 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, and 89.

To practise using the numbers we have learned,
count the following things How many pictures of
darts are there in this book? How many pictures
of dartboards are there in this book? (Count the
half ones too!) How many bullseyes are there in
this book? (Remember the ones in the middle of
the dartboards!) How many people are in the
room you are in now? (Remember to count
yourself!)
44
We have learned how to count from 1 to 99. But
the numbers dont stop there either. Remember,
they go on forever! And in darts we need to go
further than 99. How do we go on? Lets find
out. Remember that, after 9 comes 10. In the
same way, after 99 comes 100. Also, after 10
comes 11, 12, 13, and so on. In the same way,
after 100 comes 101, 102, 103, and so on. In the
boxes below, finish the sequence.
99
45
After 109 comes 110, 111, 112, and so on.
Complete the sequence below.

If you can see the pattern, complete the
following sequences too.

Congratulations! Youve finished! Now you
know the numbers and you can use them to count.
In the next book, well learn how to do more
with numbers. Well learn to add. And in the
book that follows that one, well learn to
multiply. Then youll be ready to play
darts! Draw a dart in the bullseye to show that
youve completed this book!
